Book Description

February 1999
[This book shows us that] life can be much easier if we cut its problems down to bite size. [The author, a] rabbi [and] a psychiatrist, shares with us some of the invaluable insights he has gained through his extensive experience.... There are many stresses in daily living, but we can take distress out of stress. We can modify our attitudes, use coping techniques, and reach out for help. Even big challenges can be dealt with effectively. [The author] shows how we can put a different spin on things, so that we can be more productive and happier. Here are just a few of the many ideas you'll find in this book: there's magic in a smile; stress can be beneficial; some mountains melt into molehills; lack of success is not equivalent to failure; you're more okay than not.... In this book, [the author] points out some of the things we can do. His simple, down-to-earth ideas are refreshing in a world of complexities. -Back cover.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Rabbi and psychiatrist Twerski draws upon his numerous years of counseling experience to offer advice and guidance on approaching the little and big annoyances of life with positive thinking. Interweaving biblical lessons, rabbinic teachings and psychotherapeutic coping techniques into 102 brief anecdotal meditations, Twerski teaches lessons on topics as diverse as how to "Avoid the Need for Regrets," "Judge Favorably and Act Accordingly" and "Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil." For example, in "May You Have Many Worries?" the author asserts that if you have only one big worry, it must be a pretty serious one. He advises us to remember all the little daily irritations we have so the big annoyances won't seem so overwhelming. Rather than expelling worry, he says, "bring in a few more worries, and then feel relaxed precisely because you have so many." Although some of his advice is simplistic ("Growth is not painless"), Twerski's sparkling wit and animated prose will touch the hearts and souls of his readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom to make life easier, December 7, 2004
This review is from: It's Not as Tough as You Think: How to Smooth Out Life's Bumps (Paperback)
Rabbi Twerski is a heralded psychologist one of the foremost experts on treating Addiction in the world. He is also a very learned Rabbi and prolific author . In this work he writes a series of small essays, little meditations all with the aim of helping the individual make life easier and better. Some of the titles of the essays give a fair idea of the kind of book this is." May you have many worries" "Behind at Half Time" "Who wants to be Married to a Loser?" " It all depends on how you see it."
"Avoid the Need for Regrets" "Take Things in Perspective"
The approach of dealing with the small things in life in a wise way , of having proper priorities is at the heart of the book.
Rabbi Twerski's deep Jewish knowledge is not by the way incidental to the work but informs it and gives it a dimension outside those of most self- help works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from a Rabbi who is also a physician, April 9, 2001

This review is from: It's Not as Tough as You Think: How to Smooth Out Life's Bumps (Paperback)
Rabbi Twerski is a remarkable man. Although he is a very orthodox Jew, he became a physician as well as a Rabbi. His field is psychiatry and he combines his two professions to give great advice in short chapters, generally about two pages. This book is a little like "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff," with a twinge of the religious aspect added in. Nonetheless, Rabbi twerski's observations are universal and would be of interest to non Jewish as well as Jewish readers.
