Book Description

March 8, 2011
Lauren Book, now 25, was 11 years old when her new nanny, Waldina Flores, joined the family. For the next six years Lauren endured daily sexual and physical abuse. “I was a people pleaser,” she says. “I was beaten every day…Waldy was very smart, like all predators are. She hit me and bruised me where my parents wouldn’t look. When you are 13 and 14 parents never look at their children’s stomachs or lower backs or butts or upper thighs.”

Lauren is the oldest of three children; her father, Ron Book, is a prominent Florida attorney and lobbyist. In 2002, after being encouraged by her boyfriend, Lauren confessed to her therapist, who in turn called her parents. Her father fired Flores. She fled to Oklahoma and was arrested one month later while coaching a 10-year-old girls’ soccer team. While in prison, Flores wrote love letters to Lauren asking for money and ultimately was sentenced to another 10 years on top of the initial 15 years.

Since then, Lauren and her father have successfully mounted a legislative onslaught against predators; the many laws they are responsible for include the right to get 48-hour access to predators’ HIV test results, a ban on molesters from ever contacting their victims or families, passed legislation to create a statewide network of sexual assault treatment centers, and the controversial act that barred predators from living 2500 feet from public places where children gather such as schools, parks, and playgrounds.

Lauren’s memoir is a book about hope in the face of extreme adversity. While it deals with a tremendously sensitive and “dark” subject, the hope that it delivers to readers carries an everlasting positive impact. Her story will empower readers to address abuse issues in their own lives and move them to understand the resulting deep emotional matrix that results from abuse and the incredible power of an individual’s ability to recover and embrace life.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

A memoir by a survivor of childhood sexual and physical abuse offers hope and support for victims and education for prevention.

Lauren Book was eleven years old when her new nanny, Waldina Flores, joined the family. For the next six years, Lauren endured daily sexual and physical abuse. "I was a people pleaser," she says. "I was beaten every day . . . Waldy was very smart, like all predators are. She hit me and bruised me where my parents wouldn't look. When you are thirteen or fourteen, parents never look at their children's stomachs or lower backs or butts or upper thighs."

In 2002, after being encouraged by her boyfriend, Lauren told her therapist what had been happening. The therapist called her parents and her father fired Flores, who fled to Oklahoma where she was arrested two months later. While in prison, Flores broke the terms of her probation by writing love letters to Lauren and was sentenced to an additional prison term.

Since then, Lauren and her father have successfully mounted a legislative onslaught against predators. The many Florida laws they are responsible for include the right of a victim to require that an accused or charged predator take an HIV test, with results guaranteed to the victim within forty eight hours, a law eliminating the statute of limitations on civil and criminal prosecutions when the victim of sexual abuse is under the age of sixteen, a ban on molesters ever contacting their victims or families, and legislation to create a statewide network of sexual-assault treatment centers.

Lauren's story is about hope in the face of extreme adversity. Although it deals with a tremendously sensitive and "dark" subject, It's OK to Tell carries a lasting positive impact. Lauren's story empowers us all to address abuse issues in our own lives. Her memoir moves us to understand the deep emotional matrix that results from abuse and the incredible ability of an individual to recover and embrace life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very compelling, raw, honest, and moving book. A must read for everyone, June 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Reading this book really shaked me up, but I'm very glad I read it. It was a book that I couldn't put down, but at the same time, I had to put down and think about what I just read. The first half of the book, which details Lauren's abuse, is very disturbing and upsetting. But, it's the raw truth and it shouldn't be ignored because it's bothersome to read. What is truly astonishing is the second half if the book, which details how Lauren survived, how she has worked on healing, and the tremendous work she has done to help prevent child abuse.

I'm not sure why I bought this book, but a quote from the book explains perfectly why everyone should read it, "So if we're going to keep all kids safe, we have to make incest and child sexual abuse acceptable topics of conversation. When other people want us to keep quiet because the subject makes them uncomfortable, or when someone questions our memory of events, we have to hold to the truth. Sexual abuse of children is preventable!"

By not reading this book, we are ignoring an epidemic and problem in our society. We owe it to all innocent children to understand the abuse they have to suffer from and to help, in any way we can, to end it.

Thank you, Lauren Book, for sharing your story and continuing to fight against child sexual abuse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lauren Books Shows That IT'S OK TO TELL, October 28, 2011
This review is from: It's OK to Tell: A Story of Hope and Recovery (Hardcover)
If there is one thing I have learned as I have grown older it is that all of us are worth of respect. It's hard to believe that there are individuals in the world who spend their precious time here on the earth harming others and scarring them in ways that will stay with their victims forever. Sometimes it is a family member or friend. In the case of Lauren Book it was someone who was coming into her life and her home under the guise of help. Instead what Lauren experienced was a betrayal of trust and experiences that would leave a scar that would take some time to heal.

In IT'S OK TO TELL we are able to see not only how the abuse began but Lauren courageously takes us into how her abuser manipulated her and the situation so that it would appear she was actually "helping" Lauren, not hurting her. As we go throughout the journey with Lauren we also see that although things have gotten better for survivors of abuse our judicial system sometimes still makes the victim seem like they have done something wrong.

I read this book and appreciated not only Lauren share her story so that she could benefit others but also how we can learn to help those who are healing or maybe not even admitted what has happened to them. Sometimes it takes a while for the victim to feel they can trust again or even think that others will believe or care about what they have gone through. Lauren's case, like that of so many, show that there are people who want to help and make sure this doesn't continue with others.

Abuse is abuse, no matter what form it might come in. Though there may not be physical signs of the assault, there are remnants that might take years to heal if they ever really do at all. What we can do is applaud individuals like Lauren who tell their story and encourage others to speak out. As the cover of the book says the truth is a strongest weapon against abuse, and as we are walking in our own truth we are able to be the person we were created to be.

Deeply personal and powerful to the reader, IT'S OK TO TELL is a valuable resource for us all.

5.0 out of 5 stars honest and compelling - a REAL view into the mind of a child sexual abuse victim, February 25, 2011
This review is from: It's OK to Tell: A Story of Hope and Recovery (Hardcover)
This book was an incredibly inspiring story of a young girl who was manipulated into a secret life that no child - or adult for that matter - should ever experience. The book does a very good job of explaining the vulnerable thoughts of a child who is being abused and finally answers my questions of abuse - "Why wouldn't the victim tell" and "how does someone let this happen to them?" As someone who has not been abused, It's OK to Tell has helped me understand my friends' and family's sexual abuse stories better and has helped me become a better listener as they try to tell their stories.

I could not put the book down for two days straight. Lauren's story is truly inspiring and encouraging to those who have told and those who have yet to tell.
