5.0 out of 5 stars Why does noone know this guy?
I first heard Mark Curry back in 1993, my freshman year at college, and was instantly hooked. The guy is a tremendous songwriter, and musically very talented. Maybe if you can imagine Bob Dylan in the 90's, but with alot more to work with. . . but that's not exactly right. Maybe more like Paul Westerberg, but with a grittier sound. I don't understand why his stuff...

I don't understand why his stuff never made it on the radio - its better than at least 90% of the fluff that calls itself music today, but at the same time, its still very accessible. If you don't find at least one song on here that you really like, then you don't like good alternative rock from the days before alternative was mainstream. Mark, if you're out there, I hope you are still making music. You may not have had commercial success, but you've touched at least a few of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Listening, January 10, 2003

This review is from: It's Only Time (Audio CD)
This CD was one I ran across in the used bin. I jotted the name down and came to Amazon to read the reviews. Two hours later, I was back in the car headed to the CD store. Wow! Don't let the little t-shirt cover photo or the shirtless back cover photo fool you. This guy is not just a squeezable teen item, he is an incredible singer!

On the title track "All Over Me" he wails, "Think about it, baby; who's fooling who?" with such strong emotion that he draws you into the performance. "Musta Been Jo" starts with a classic rhythmic guitar like "I Can't Let Go" by the Hollies; only when you follow the lyrics closely do your realize the song's about someone digging up a dead dog. "Sorry About the Weather" slows with a folkie verse, "Sorry about the little wars that don't ever seem to end; killin' off young American boys just as fast as we can send 'em over." If you want to hear amazing vocal pyrotechnics, don't miss "Blow Me Down." Curry isn't skat singing; but he blows a phrase so fast it'll make your head spin, "Feel like I'm movin' about at 170 miles an hour now." This is a great performance! "I must love this f**kin' pain I'm feelin'," Mark sings on the thunderous "Wanna Run Away." David Lasley & Rosemary Butler do backup vocals on the slow sad "Nothin' At All." "Gone Swimming" is another strong performance with French horn flavoring the track. The deeply romantic "Always A Place" is the most beautiful pop melody, "I'll run at any time into the safety of her arms." Mark gives another 110% on "Drinkin' & How." On "Somehow" Curry sings to a pretty pop melody, "By this time next week I'll be long gone somewhere with you." The CD concludes with the lovely title track. Mark Curry's vocals show an expressiveness equal to Tom Waits while having a better vocal instrument. His songwriting hits the mark more often than not, but it's his performance as a singer that makes this ESSENTIAL listening. U snooze, U lose! Enjoy!

Mark Curry is truly amazing! I saw him in Phoenix, AZ at the Mason Jar in '92 or '93. I have been looking for this CD EVERYWHERE since the tape that I bought in '92 is totally worn out. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves great music. Where is he?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, June 28, 2002

I saw MC at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor during college in 92' and had the tape in my car for years. Lost the tape forgot about him. Recently I racked my brain, and remembered. This CD is a little mellow, then Jams, reminds me of a pre Ben Harper, with a soap box voice. great cd for driving, or cleaning the house. Too bad "MTV" never made him famous, guess his music is "too real" for pop culture.

I bought this tape when I was 14, and it was totally unlike anything I had been listening to. I wore that tape out within a year, and I know every word on that album. This guy is amazing, and I've never met anyone who has heard of him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still., August 31, 2008

Firstly, music has always played a big part in my life and my good times. While at a very young age, I first heard Mark Curry on my father's radio station. The song was, "Blow Me Down" and soon, 'It's Only Time' became my first ever music purchase. Check out the mans songs. They haven't faded since I was younger. Today, they remind me of how my heart was tempted by the good and the bad that Curry lays down. Despite being so young at the time, I wasn't scared, rather rocked by what I heard and was looking forward to growing up. I still am. And that sentiment, I hope, Curry wouldn't mind. I am twenty-six, live in New York City, and know my music. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely GREAT songwriting!, January 19, 2007
This review is from: It's Only Time (Audio CD)
Mark Curry is a hugely prolific songwriter. Every song on this CD is well written, well crafted and full of hooks both melodically and musically. This CD is produced in a way that would make the listener know what a great LIVE performer he must be. There is a beautiful sense of "rawness" to the production and to the vocal tracks. I've loved this CD for years. I think Amazon has the actual release date wrong. I remember this CD from the mid 90's.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Find, January 5, 2001

I first heard 'sorry about the weather' on the radio in '92. I think it was Curry's only song with any radio play. (It probably hasn't been on the radio since) Then shortly there after I found a promo of 'It's only time' for two dollars in a pawn shop while I was on vacation. One of the best music finds in my life. This guy is like a young Tom Waits. Simply amazing. 'It's only time' is a solid from start to finish, and is a must for anyone who's interested in great songwriting. His second release 'Let the wretched come home' is almost as good. Both of them are kind of hard to come by these days, but if you can, pick 'em up.

Well Mark, it has been quite a long time since I have seen you, but everytime I listen to this album it reminds me of when we were still kids. I don't think I will ever get tired of listening to this album....it is a must have. It does not matter what type of music you prefer.....this album has tremendous variety. Everyone will find something that they like. Keep up the good work....I hope to see you again soon.
