I've never reviewed or listened to a Matt White album in full before this one so I can't compare it to his first.
However, I can say that I got onto this guy from the movie
Little Manhattan which played his single, 'Love'.
I was enamored enough by that tune that I eventually came to Amazon and checked out the samples to his first CD. But nothing else stood out. So I skipped it altogether.
Fast forward about 2 or so years and we're here now, reviewing
It's The Good Crazy.
The first track, 'And The Beat Goes On' is nice and upbeat and makes for the perfect opener, while Matt's voice almost sounds like Adam Levine (from the pop rock band Maroon 5). I dig the second track 'Falling In Love (With My Best Friend)' because it's really relaxing and chill.
Next up is 'She's On Fire'. Another track that is calm, but this time has emotive vocals that keep things interesting. With the assist of a keyboard (which sounds really good here), Matt sails his way through this one. 'Taking On Water' is an acoustic track with just vocals, guitar and some drum work really. It's not a bad track but it's another calm track which makes three in a row. This may be off-putting to some.
Well, 'Color Blind' is a bit more upbeat compared to the last 3 tracks, but it still doesn't stand out much or go anywhere lyrically IMHO. I guess you could say it's very pleasant filler. 'When I Fall' is a pretty piano ballad about letting someone down in life. It's lyric-driven. It's a bit repetitive with the question "Will you catch me when I fall?" repeated a lot, but if it weren't for that, I'd put it ahead of 'And The Beat Goes On'.
We're halfway through the tracks now. Next, is another upbeat track called 'Honeymoon Phase'. It's actually a pretty simple track that is sort of repetitive too but it's pleasant-sounding. I just feel like Matt could have done more with it. Like the song didn't give us its all. 'Therapy' has a nice bounce to it. It is another easy track but it stands out with the simple, repetitive (but effective) piano arrangement. I really love this one for some reason.
Up next is another great track. 'Teacher Teacher' feels like a song out of the 50's or something. Down to the piano riff and the vocal, it really is pretty hip in that way. You just have to hear it to believe it! 'Off My Wall' isn't a favorite. The production is kinda noisy (which I don't mind in THIS sense anyway), but what grates is the chorus: the entire thing is sung in falsetto. And it's repeated way too much in the song. I can see me skipping this one a bit in the future.
The album leaves us at a high, low point. I'll explain. 'Sunshine' is the closer and it's upbeat. However, the lyrics are a bit of a downer and seems like the protagonist has hit a wall. In it, Matt has life getting him down, being overworked and underpaid, dealing with the same friends over and over and just not digging life. I just know that he just wants things right. Gets points for the Facebook nod towards the end.
This just so happens to be my 900th review! Woohoo!!!
Here's a quick rating of all the songs:
1. 'And The Beat Goes On': B-
2. 'Falling In Love (With My Best Friend): C+
3. 'She's On Fire': C+
4. 'Taking On Water': C
5. 'Color Blind': C+
6. 'When I Fall': B-
7. 'Honeymoon Phase': C+
8. 'Therapy': B
9. 'Teacher Teacher': B-
10. 'Off My Wall': C-
11. 'Sunshine': B-
All in all, these tracks are worth it. Some are better than others but the best tracks are pretty good. It's kind of a break-up album. I've been listening to quite a few of them lately (not planned, BTW). One fantastic one that I'd recommend is Sara Bareilles' second major label release,
Kaleidoscope Heart. She also happens to be another piano pop singer-songwriter. The album features slick, but bouncy production (for the uptempos), some ballads and all-around great songwriting.
I know it's not much to go on, but comparing these tracks and the samples from Matt's first album, I'd take this one over that one any day. I am planning on purchasing this too. I had the pleasure of listening to it at AOL's Listening Party online, which features a slew of new albums (in full) each week.
3.75 stars or a 7.5/10.
