Book Description

Kids and parents alike will rejoice in this lively read-aloud picture book, as the main character runs into (and away from) a tiger over and over again as the plot gets sillier and sillier. Perfect for acting out while reading, It's a Tiger! offers just the right amount of excitement without being too scary, and a sweet ending with a bit of a twist.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-Young imaginations will run wild with this story within a story of a young boy who escapes from a tiger over and over again in various outrageous land- and seascapes. Tankard's bold black lines, created with ink and digital media, frame the cartoonlike characters and allow the tiger's stripes to stand out strikingly when viewed from a storytime circle. Children will enjoy trying to spot the tiger's tail, which is often camouflaged within the background scenery, while the protagonist regularly shouts, "A TIGER!" displayed in large-type font. Teachers can use this book to lead their listening audiences in re-creating the boy's actions as he sometimes creeps and crawls, yet at other times he boldly races to the surprising conclusion. This tale will be a boon to creative minds everywhere and a participatory storytime winner.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VAα(c) Copyright 2011. 5.0 out of 5 stars Tyger tyger burning bright . . . December 29, 2012
There is an art to reading a picture book but I've not encountered many schools that actually teach that skill. Librarians will learn it in their graduate courses, of course, but what about parents and booksellers? Are they doomed to stumble through their readings without getting some of the insider tips and tricks? Yup, pretty much. The only thing you can really do is just recommend to them picture books that make reading aloud one-on-one or to large groups a painless experience. Books that have an inherent interior rhythm and logic that kids will naturally adhere to. So each and every year I sit and wait for those great picture book readalouds of the year. For 2012 I've seen a couple that lend themselves to groups. "Up, Tall and High" by Ethan Long is ideal for preschoolers. "Creepy Carrots!" by Aaron Reynolds is perfect for the 1st and 2nd graders. But the all-around best readaloud of the year, bar none as far as I can tell, has got to be "It's a Tiger!" A boon to librarians and booksellers looking for new storytime fare as well as parents and grandparents, David LaRochelle's latest is a hoot, a holler, and could even be called a hootenanny if you're so inclined to call it that.

So you're walking through the forest, minding your own business, checking out monkeys when you realize that the orange and black tail over there isn't a vine at all. It's a TIGER!! Like a shot you (which is to say, the boy in the book) take off lickety split. Still, it doesn't matter where you go. Whatever you do, that darned tiger seems to follow. Dark caves, ships at sea, desert islands, the tiger is everywhere!

5.0 out of 5 stars New favorite story time read August 22, 2012
When you open to the first page of It's a Tiger and the narrator asks "Are you ready for a story?" you just know this is going to be good. This book is made for group sharing as our young hero leads us through the jungle where we encounter snakes, bats, boats, and tigers. But does that tiger really want to eat us? That's the question that delivers some dramatic and funny moments that are sure to charm the socks off of any story time crowd. There is plenty of opportunity for the story reader to really ham it up with this one, and the ending delivers big.

This book is delightfully illustrated by Jeremy Tankard, and if you haven't discovered his work yet, you are in for a treat. It's a Tiger delivers his trademark bold colors and thick lined creations that are sure to engage even the most inattentive story listener. His characters offer up a level of humor and expressiveness that always makes me smile! They are a perfect pairing for a story that is energetic, fun filled and sure to please. Don't be afraid to cut loose with this one, and you will be guaranteed to have a story time audience roaring right along with you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but not entirely original August 22, 2012
This is a cute story, and fun to read aloud, but it's very reminiscent of the old Sesame Street audio sketch "Tiger Hunt" in which Ernie travels through different types of terrain, gets scared by a tiger, and finds out the tiger is not as scary as he thought it would be. It would be quite a coincidence if this author was not influenced by that sketch (which can be found on iTunes). However, the original is not available as a book or video, so this is a fun format to experience a similar "play-along" adventure. And it's not exactly the same, by any means. I just didn't find it as fresh as kids who aren't familiar with the audio sketch will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story August 25, 2012

Love this book! My six year old wants it read every day. I put it away and she gets it back out! Also, as a former teacher I could see using it for 2/3 grades to write a continuation of this story with the new animal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Story April 6, 2014
By Lorrie
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
My granddaughter (21 mos.) was coming to visit, so we stopped at our local public library for about 10 books to read during her stay. The only one she wanted to read over and over again was "It's a Tiger!". We returned the books to the library afterwards. As her 2nd birthday was approaching, my daughter said "no more toys ~she has enough!" but maybe get her that "Tiger" book. I didn't have the exact title or author's name, but looking through my recycling I found the library receipt. I was so thankful - I found the correct title and called the library to get the author's name. She opened the book today and squealed with delight. She is able to repeat several of the words and the artwork is delightful. It is destined to be one of her favorite books and according to our local newspaper, the author just won another literary book award!

5.0 out of 5 stars Childhood November 25, 2012
This book is what childhood is all about!! I can just see a little boy in the backyard of his house with his stuffed tiger making up adventures and just being a kid. I feel like in a world where kids watch too much TV and play too many video games a lot of kids have lost their imaginations. This book is exactly what I want to promote in my child: creativity, play and a daring imagination. My little guy loves this book and likes to make up his own chase senes and adventures after reading it. I would highly recommend this book to other parents who not only want to create a love of reading in their child but who want to make reading come alive in a fun, exciting experience.
