PreSchool-"It's time," a scruffy gray-and-white dog declares to an orange cat, and the feline happily runs off to spread the news. She repeats the phrase to a pig, who passes it on to a hen, and so on, until all of the farm animals are gathered together in the barn. When the dog moves aside and tells her friends to look, they hold back an enthusiastic cheer, whispering a gentle "Welcome" instead, "For there in a heap/lay three new puppies/fast asleep." Deady uses simple language, catchy rhymes, and a repeated refrain to build a sense of anticipation. This feeling of excitement is reflected in the brightly colored art, which shows a cast of appealing animals running to welcome the new litter. Textured brush strokes and the slightly stylized appearance of the creatures give the pictures the look of folk paintings. An easy-to-handle size makes this title a great step up from board books for toddlers.

PreS. This simple, rhyming story, part of the Harper Growing Tree series, will draw young preschoolers. With the refrain, "It's time!" on each double-page spread, suspense builds among the farm animals as they share good news and gather at the barn. Some of the pictures are lost because the book is too tightly bound, and toddlers may not appreciate the sometimes blurry, computer-generated art; but they'll love the suspense (Why is it time?) and the climactic discovery (three puppies have been born). Even after the surprise is revealed, kids will enjoy going back to the beginning, pointing at the animals, and chanting the refrain.
