Why Octopuses?

The truth is, I wasn't planning to write a book about octopuses at all. My big idea was to write a fascinating, fast-paced book about my favorite animals -- snails.

The problem was that every time I opened a book to study those snails, I was distracted. I couldn't stop reading about their amazing cousins, the cephalopods. It was hard to keep my mind on snails when all around me there were tales of giant squids, brainy octopuses, and shapeshifting cuttlefish.

Finally I had to admit it -- snails may be beautiful, but compared to octopuses they lead pretty quiet, dull lives. So I left the snails to destroy our garden in peace and dived into the extraordinary underwater world of cephalopods. It's been quite an adventure -- I'm so glad I did!
