The Joy of Your World Is...Paul Barman,
This review is from: It's Very Stimulating (Audio CD)
(First off, don't buy this here. $35 is too much for this 15 minute masterpiece, when you can find it easily everywhere for about $11 or $12.)Thank Prince Paul for bringing us -- MC Paul Barman. BUT BE FOREWARNED--Barman is not for everyone. He is probably someone that you will either find to be one of the most original and clever underground rappers in recent history, or you'll just think that he is the whackest rapper in history. He also, has a great guest appearance on the track "MTV Get Off the Air, Part 2" (named after the Dead Kennedys' song)with Princess Superstar. The only bad part of the album is that it only lasts 15 minutes; but it is good, b/c it will leave you wanting more.

One of the two best white rappers going....,

This is a really funny, skilled, and well-produced album put together by MC Paul Barman, who, judging from the picture on the inside liner notes, is THE most unlikely looking rapper to ever put down words on vinyl. He is juvenile and sophisticated; both very similar and very different from anyone else out there (he talks about sex just like every other rapper; he might even one-up Princess Superstar on the track on which they collaborate.... which.... for those familiar with both.... is something....) This is an album worth buying, though, even without Barman's innovative raps. Prince Paul is at BY FAR his best if best is defined by sampling the most esoteric stuff. If this is the future of rap, rap's not going to ever sell a lot of records.... but.... this is a really, really good album. Buy it.

I knew when I got this album that MC Paul Barman was some kind of Harvard-educated nerd rapper who would be dropping all kinds of obscure references (and that appeals to me), but I wasn't prepared for the non-stop graphic horn-dogginess of "It's Very Stimulating". Maybe I thought he would be rapping about interest rates and evolutionary theory instead of his absurdist sexual fantasies. Don't get me wrong, it's all pretty humorous and tongue-in-cheeky; it just might not appeal to some people. ... I think it's funny, but just be warned is all I'm saying.Prince Paul's production is appropriately loopy and off-the-wall enough to complement Barman's crazy rhymes. My only real complaints about "It's Very Stimulating" are that it's so short -- the whole album is six songs and doesn't crack 20 minutes -- and that sometimes the smooth flow of his rap is sacrificed to squeeze in some extra-crazy reference. According to the interview the Onion did with MC PB a while back, he's working on a new album, though -- I'm looking forward to it since I'm sure it'll be like this one, but longer and more polished. Until that one drops, though, "It's Very Stimulating" is a fun and original record in its own right. Just trying to keep up with the nods to cartoons, other rappers, Polish film-makers and who knows what else will make you want to listen to the album repeatedly (at least, if you enjoy that kind of kitchen-sink rapping ... I do).

even though the album is way too short, the mileage you get out of this ep is worth it. i listened to it four times the first day i got this cd, and i've never gotten sick of it. mc paul barman is one sick twisted guy. he is completely amazing. his words dance around the beats with ill synchronicity. the sound is absolutely unique, definitely better than certain mtv platinum sell out contemporaries. prince paul is the mastermind of hip hop, he is always true to himself. producing for the off beat mc paul barman produced a dope collaboration.

My boss pulls me aside at work and slaps a pair of headphones across my scalp. In the next instant my ears are delighted to hear MC Paul Barman's stylings in the song, "The Joy Of Your World." He then told me that is was this guy named Paul Barman and it has scarce left my cd player since. I also force all my friends to listen to it when in my car, most of them dig it on their own now... I suggest you do too.

If you like rap at all, you should definitely pick this EP up. MC Paul Barman is a skinny, white, Jewish rapper with a perverted sense of humor. Most of the tracks on this release have to do with sex in some way. This makes for an extremely humorous listening. What makes it more than just pure comedy is the combination of two key things: 1) Barman's insane rhyme style and 2)Prince Paul's usual genius as the disc's producer. MC Paul Barman rhymes with the best of them. His vocabulary is extraordinary. His flow... wow! The sheer fact that a man can possibly rap that fast and keep every word perfectly audible is astounding. But the main ingredient on this release is Prince Paul. The tracks are flawless. Time and time again this man proves he can do no wrong. He could make Garth Brooks sound funky. This EP is no exception. Paul lays down the perfect beats to compliment Barman and makes the whole package sound better than it ever should have. To wrap up, just buy it! You won't regret it.

I've been listening to a couple of cuts from this CD on Napster for a few weeks. Proof that Napster actually makes you money! I got the CD yesterday! He's funny, wry, and uses words like "ubiquitous" in his rhymes. Sure, he's not hard like street tough, but he's hard in another way (how'd he get those hot chicks on the CD cover anyway?). Prince Paul rocks! If you like this one, I recommend to you Beau Sia's "Attack! Attack! Go!" Same sense of humor. Similar musical sensibilities - though he didn't have Prince Paul with him.

Lyrics that will make you crack up, great production by Prince Paul, an almost perfect record! Now if they could only get a version of "Enter Pan-Man" with the Metallica chorus past those lawyers...

paul barman is to hip-hop what chris dudley is to the nba. both are ivy leaguers (paul barman, brown; chris dudley, yale). both are white dudes in a field dominated by african-american men. both have unique skills that are useful and validate their roles in their respective professions (barman, nerdy wordplay and high-brow references; dudley, fouling and shot-blocking). both provide needed jolts of comic relief. and both make white people feel better about urban cultures that have left them behind. in the end, barman can rap and i can't be mad at his music (provided by prince paul). it may be gimmick rap, but it's damn funny.
