Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6–Although this book is a satisfying read by itself, the story will make more sense to readers familiar with We the Children (S & S, 2010). Benjamin Pratt and his friend Jill are trying to find the clues that will keep their 200-year-old school from being torn down and replaced by a theme park. Ben goes to the funeral of Mr. Keane, the janitor who died in the first book, where he meets Tom Benton, who held the job before Mr. Keane. The janitor's widow gives Ben a large set of keys, and he and Jill solve the clue, "after five bells sound, time to sit down" and find a codicil from Duncan Oakes, founder of the school, that might change everything. The current janitor is stalking Ben and Jill and taunts them with the fact that in three weeks the building will be demolished. Expressive pen-and-ink illustrations add detail and excitement to the adventure, including the clues and coins found. Solid writing, likable characters, danger, a seaside setting, and now treasure will make readers eager for the third installment.Debbie Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI

From Booklist

In this second installment of the Keepers of the School series, Benjamin Pratt and his friend Jill make new contacts and uncover more clues in their effort to save their historic New England school from amusement-park developers. As the plot unrolls, the villain, a school janitor who actually works for the developers, is revealed to be even more unsavory than the kids initially suspected, and Benjamin becomes friends with another, retired janitor, who turns out to be a valuable source of information. Clements cleverly weaves his clues together, creating an intriguing, suspenseful multipart mystery. Grades 4-6. --Todd Morning --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

More About the Author

Most of my characters are fairly normal people who are dealing with the basics of everyday life--getting along with others, finding a place in the world, discovering talents, overcoming challenges, trying to have some wholesome fun along the way, and getting into some scrapes and a little mischief now and then, too. I guess I hope my readers will be able to see bits and pieces of themselves in the stories, particularly the novels that take place in and around school. School is a rich setting because schools and education are at the heart of every community. The stories that are set in school seem to resonate with kids, teachers, parents, librarians--readers of all ages. Everyone's life has been touched by school experiences. And I also hope, of course, that kids and others will enjoy reading, enjoy the use of language, enjoy my storytelling.

Sixth-grader Benjamin Pratt is a reluctant hero living in the waterfront town of Edgeport, Massachusetts. After saving the life of show-off classmate Robert Gerritt during a sailboat accident, Ben shuns the limelight, as he is more focused on trying to save historic Captain Oakes School from the wrecking ball.

A group of developers has bought the school property to make room for an amusement park. Demolition begins immediately after the building closes for summer vacation, which will be in just a few weeks. Ben has been entrusted with a sacred secret by janitor Roger Keane just before he died. For centuries, janitors like Mr. Keane have been caretakers of the school. Lurking in the background is the evil new janitor, Lyman, the man Mr. Keane warned Ben not to trust.

Under the close scrutiny of the sneaky Lyman, Ben and his friend, Jill Acton, work together to find a way to keep the school open. While doing research in the school library, Ben and Jill make an amazing discovery about Captain Oakes's will. But how can they make sure their finding doesn't fall into the wrong hands? And something else is worrying Ben. The usually organized and cheery Jill is cranky and acting strangely, like she has something to hide.

Ben has a few secrets of his own. While attending Mr. Keane's funeral, he meets Tom Benton, an elderly former janitor with a flair for the dramatic. Tom likes to spin tales --- and asks Ben for a favor. But can Tom be trusted?

In this second installment of the Keepers of the School adventure/mystery series, Andrew Clements brings back the familiar faces of Ben, Jill and Robert while introducing a few new characters.

My kids (9 and 12)love Andrew Clements books. I wasn't sure if they were tired of him yet, because they have read ALL of his books. Tehy were so excited to get this book that they were fighting over who would read it first! Andrew Clements keeps my kids reading and loving to read. I would strongly recommend him as an author.
