This chunky board book joins several others by Jeanette Winter (Hey Diddle Diddle, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star and Rock-A-Bye Baby). The unusual format has each image filling two pages and the book must be held in a vertical position. It works quite well for this nursery rhyme, as the spider climbs up the spout, the rain comes down and washes her out. When the sun appears, the intrepid little spider does it all over again. Another story runs parallel in the pictures--a black bird watches every move, but does not seem too intent on making a meal of the spider. Our daughter enjoys reading this book with us. The nursery rhyme unfolds as each page is turned and the next illustration is revealed. The book is also sized for small hands and is nearly indestructible.

Our daughter has loved this book since she was six months old! She has several Itsy-Bitsy Spider books, but this one is by far her favorite. The pictures are engaging and bright. There are only a few words on each page which match the spider's actions. Wonderful book with great illustrations.

My daughter has loved this book since she was four months old. The pictures describe the text and each picture foreshadows the next action. For example, the dark cloud appears in the sky before the line "Down came the rain".

The illustrator has also added a bird that watches the spider in all the pictures. This extra feature will delight older children and adds more interest to the "story".

The pictures are especially charming.
