Book Description

June 9, 2009 3 - 7 years
For a teeny-tiny dog seeking a home in a daunting world, big hopes — and a bit of ingenuity — go a long way.

Itty Bitty is a very, very tiny dog. But when he finds an enormous bone, he goes straight to work, gnawing out doors and windows and hollowing out the entire inside. When his work is done, however, his cavernous house still feels incomplete. Where can he find some itty-bitty things that will make this bone a home? Everyone from dollhouse lovers to grown-ups setting up a home of their own will fall for this comical tale of an optimistic canine who is small in stature but huge in charm.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—Good things come in small packages, including this book. When Itty Bitty, "a very, very tiny dog," finds a "very, very enormous bone," he turns it into his new home. The house feels empty, however, so he goes out to buy some furniture, driving to the store in his walnut-shell vehicle. Everything Itty Bitty sees there is huge, and he worries that he won't find anything suitable until he notices a sign pointing to the "Teeny-Weeny Department." He returns home with his tiny car loaded to the brim with everything he needs to make his new dwelling cozy. Children will enjoy this simple story about finding a place for oneself. The colorful illustrations, done in acrylic with ink, add cheer to the delightful story. The text is simple enough for beginning readers, and the book also makes a great read-aloud with small groups.—Kate Neff, Alachua County Library, Gainesville, FL END

Some things are very small. Itty Bitty was an itty bitty dog. He was even smaller than the little daisies you can sometimes see tucked in and around the blades of grass. One day as he was driving around in his little bicycle made of half of a walnut shell (he was THAT small!) He found a "very, very enormous bone." It wouldn't look very big to most children, but to Itty Bitty it was huge and would make the perfect place to set up his home. He quickly got to work and chewed out windows and doors and kept right on going until he had hollowed out the center of the bone. He leaned out one of the windows and claimed to anyone who would listen, that his work was "Satisfactory!"

Itty Bitty had finished his work, "but the bone didn't quite feel like home." When he called out "Helloooooooooooo . . . " his voice echoed right through the place. It was missing something for sure. He got back on his bicycle and claimed he had a bit of shopping to do. He drove up to the "Double Dee Department" store, but everything in there was just a shade too BIG to put in his house. He looked at a sofa that was at least four times larger than his house. Even the prices seemed to be so BIG he wouldn't be able to afford them. The couch was a whopping $99.99. Was Itty Bitty going to be able to find some itty bitty furniture to fit into his itty bitty home?

This is a charming itty bitty story that will fit nicely in itty bitty hands. The storyline is not complicated, but is a surefire smile maker. The artwork is colorful, simple and meshes nicely with the story. If you are looking for a little story that your itty bitty youngster can relate too, this itty bitty story just might be what you are looking for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming tale and a thoughtful house warming gift September 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a bright and cheerful book with a lovely message for both young and old. It's about having a place of your own to call home, making it truly yours by filling it with what matters and what suits you. It's about finding your itty bitty place in a great big world. This little dog is just charming and with very few words conveys his feelings of pride in his new home, one that wasn't complete until he found itty bitty objects to surround himself.

I gave it to my (fully grown) sister upon the purchase of her first home and she treasures this book and its message. I wish I could say that I came up with this idea as a house warming gift, but I borrowed it from a column written by a designer who keeps copies of this book in her gift closet. Now, I do as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Imaginings of a Dog December 14, 2010
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
my daughter, who is now five, loves this book. She has it memorized from cover to cover. "Itty Bitty is a dog, a very, very tiny dog." She loves that Itty Bitty creates his own home that doesn't quite feel like a home.

when we get to the last line, "it felt like home." she smiles at me and says, "that's my favorite part mom." just like each of us, we are glad when we find our home.
