Product Description

Run to the beat! For the avid sportsman, our Ivation Runner's Radio steps up to the plate and delivers reliable AM/FM radio anywhere from the shower to the Swiss alps. The device is splash-proof thanks to IPX4 waterproof construction.

Operation is incredibly simple and even fun: Our design team worked on developing an infallible controls system that is readily accessible at all times, including during a vigorous half-mile sprint. The housing on the front of the Runner's Radio incorporates two independent rotating selection wheels. The center one is colored and serves as a simple volume dial: spin clockwise to crank it up, counterclockwise to turn it down. The outer ring acts as an accurate AM/FM tuner that lets you quickly run through channels, and a separate click-knob makes it easy to switch between AM and FM.

To address the weak signal/signal-loss issue common with small portable radios, we chose to pair the Runner's Radio with an external antenna. External antennae have a reputation for stronger reception and uninterrupted streaming. But of course, we implemented the antenna in a clever, Ivation-true way: As we anyway fitted the Runner's Radio with a hanging/wearing strap, we brilliantly built the antenna into the tip of the strap, where it meets the device. Radio frequency: 540-1600Khz AM, 88-108Mhz FM. Uses two AA alkaline batteries.

This is a cute AM/FM radio that is water resistant. You can use it in the shower, outdoors, camping to listen to the news, weather or music. The antenna for the radio is ingeniously inside of the carrying strap. The unit operates on two AA batteries and I used rechargeable eneloop batteries in mine. The radio's reception was good and the sound quality was fair. It is a simple and easy to use radio and it reminded me of my childhood days when we all had a transistor radio we used. I like that this one is water resistant. Just remember that it is rated to IPx4 which means splash proof and not submersible. That means they spray it with 10 liters of water per minute for 5 minutes.

The controls are simple and old fashioned just like the old radios I used to own. You twist the knob and tune the station. The center dial is the on/off switch and the volume switch. It is my only issue in that it has a small dip in a smooth plastic dial and my slick skin made it hard to turn. If it was wet it would have been worse to control the volume. The tuning for me was a little better because of the extended knob coming out of the dial.

I liked the size of the radio and it makes a nice portable radio for going camping, hiking or any outdoor purpose. It is always nice to have a radio around for emergencies and bad weather. I liked this radio and I thought it was priced properly. I rated it as a 5 star item.

I was supplied a sample for test and evaluation and I promised to provide a fair and honest review.

There are no bells and whistles on the Ivation AM/FM splashproof radio, but it's a good basic radio that's ideal for damp conditions as well as in the shower. For the shower, I hung it over the handheld showerhead support and played the radio while I took my usual ten-minute shower. It was protected from direct spray, but it got soaking wet from the splashing. The water didn't appear to affect it. Afterwards, I shook the water off the radio and wiped it dry with a towel, and left it hanging in the shower.

This is a very basic radio. It has analog tuning, no presets, no clock or alarm functions, and no weather radio - just AM/FM. But it brought in AM and FM stations very well, with more than enough volume to be heard over the shower noise, and pretty good clarity for voice and music, especially with FM stations. In our area, there are dozens of radio stations, with a number of them coming through very well even at night. I did try picking up a few of the weaker signals, and the radio did a decent job of separating them from the more powerful stations, although there was some bleeding over in a few cases. But overall, I was very pleased with the radio's reception. My only suggestion for improving the radio concerns the controls. The tuning is by a plastic ring with a knob on it. Inside the tuning ring is a circular disk that controls on/off and volume. The disk has a small dimple where you place your fingertip to rotate the disk. With wet hands, it would be easier to rotate if there was a raised knob instead of the dimple. But it's not a big deal, since the disk is easy enough to turn.

It's not a big radio.

You may have noticed that there are tons of fancy electronics floating around. However, at times it is nice to have something that is basic, easy to use, and just ...works. The Ivation battery operated splashproof radio is exactly what you think it is... and old fashioned shower radio. While it does not feature bluetooth connectivity - that also means that everyone, regardless of their age, will be able to operate it with ease.

Notes-

- Built in antenna works better than I would have guessed. It picks up all of the major AM and FM channels in our market.

- Completely splashproof

- Plenty loud for shower listening.

- Sound quality - nothing overly elaborate - it sounds like a small transistor radio. However, I don't think most people are looking for high fidelity acoustics while taking a shower. Audiophiles may need to learn to take baths!

- Has a strap that allows it to hang down about 9 inches below your shower head

- Uses 2 AA batteries which are not included

Final Verdict - A pretty basic product that operates as you would expect. It works and is easy to use (easy enough for your elderly parents/grandparents).

4 1/2 Stars

This is one of the better sounding shower radios I’ve used. Although it’s pretty compact (roughly 3.5 inches square and 1.5 inch thick) the sound quality is pretty impressive given the constraints of a single rear-facing speaker. The volume can be raised to a point where it can be easily heard over the sound of running water.

The overall look is nice. The build quality appears solid, and the colors look nice (a baby blue dial, with the majority of the radio being white). It uses 2 AA batteries which are not included.

Reception was decent. It has an internal antenna, so how the radio is positioned is critical to pulling in the station you want to pull in. It can be hung from a hook or the shower head using the included loop, or it can stand up on a shelf or tub edge.

The big negative is tuning. It uses a rotary dial to set the station. It’s not very precise – it’s very easy to overshoot or undershoot the desired station. Once you tune it to the station you want it stays put, but getting there can be a challenge.

This is a decent choice if you’re looking for a low-cost shower radio and tend to listen to the same station all the time. However, if you like to change stations frequently, the tuning can be a bit frustrating.
