"Rigor mortis had set in by the time police arrived," Special Prosecutor Tony Clayton told the jury, watching their eyes as they viewed the photograph of the bloodied arm of Geralyn Barr DeSoto. Geralyn's clenched fist, frozen in death away from her body, held her secret. "Geralyn was trying to tell us something. She was telling us how hard she fought. She was telling us who her killer is. 'Right here,' she said. 'Right here I have the killer. Just open my hand. Just open my hand, and you'll know who did it to me.'" Two months later: "Charlotte Murray Pace fought from one room of that apartment to the other," Prosecutor John Sinquefield told jurors as they blinked tears away. "She clawed, she hit, she fought. As her young, strong heart pumped its last blood out of the holes he cut out of her, she fought. And in the fight, he took her life, her body. But he could not take her honor. She preserved her honor by the way she lived and the way she died. That fight is not over, ladies and gentlemen of the jury. Charlotte Murray Pace has brought her fight to you." These crimes are vividly depicted in this first comprehensive book about Derrick Todd Lee. I've Been Watching You-The South Louisiana Serial Killer dramatically tells the story of Lee's life and follows the timeline of his reign of terror over South Louisiana. Readers will become intimately acquainted with the seven victims who have been linked to Lee by DNA, along with the frustrated investigators who could not catch this diabolical killer. This recounting also details the murders of ten other women who were not connected by DNA, but whom these authors believe should be included on the list of Lee's victims due to strong circumstantial evidence. There are many unanswered questions regarding these series of killings. How did Lee find his victims, and why did he choose them? Why didn't the Multi-Agency Homicide Task Force believe he was the killer when his name was brought repeatedly to its attention? What evil p

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The writing of this book changed our lives.

We had lived the fear that all women in South Louisiana felt when Derrick Todd Lee was on his rampage, but as we gained intimate knowledge of the murders and the victims, we began to feel their loss deeply. We had come to admire the victims, to know them, and we hurt for them. We hurt for their families. We began to question why we were doing this.

I expressed our feelings to Lynne Marino, mother of victim Pam Kinamore. Lynne had been very helpful to us and believed in our project. Her response was simply, "This is a story that needs to be told. I want everyone to know what a beautiful person my daughter was and how horrible this monster was."

So we had our answer. This was a story that needed to be told. And the telling was not easy. As we sifted through crime scene photographs, we had difficulty sleeping at night. As we tried to get information from the task force, we were met with brick walls. As we mulled over police reports and trial transcripts, the enormity of our task became daunting.

After more than a year spent researching each case, we were able to begin the writing process. More than anything, we hope that you take away from this book that it is okay to not open your door to a stranger, no matter how friendly he appears. Caution can sometimes save your life.

From the Inside Flap

She fought so hard—punching and kicking and scratching—harder than she had ever had to fight before. She fought for her life, for her mother, for her dreams. Even as her blood ran from her wounds, she fought, exhausted and crying but never pleading. The flathead screwdriver kept coming at her, again and again, but she could no longer feel the pain. She could feel death swirling, reaching out for her. She could feel the man over her, pounding into her, frenzied by the blood. He was a big man. Black. One moment of darkness in a life filled with light and vision. She held on to the vision even as she slipped away. Charlotte Murray Pace was gone, yet the screwdriver kept coming. Death was not enough to still the frenzy

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't read this one while you're alone...., July 15, 2006
This review is from: I've Been Watching You: The South Louisiana Serial Killer (Paperback)
This was a very well written "intense" book. I could not put it down, except for the dozen or so times I got up to check again if my doors were locked.

As I read this book I imagined the countless hours Susan must have spent researching the evidence and interviewing families and those involved in capturing the killer. She told this story in a way that never lets you forget this happened to real people, people just like you and me. I cried for these woman and their families. Derrick Todd Lee is a "monster" and he destroyed many lives. I agree, all women should read this book...the women in this story did nothing to deserve death but we can learn from their stories and possibly protect ourselves from the countless "monsters" that are still out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monsters do exist, February 25, 2006

This review is from: I've Been Watching You: The South Louisiana Serial Killer (Paperback)
I just finished this book, took only 2 days, as I couldn't put it down. Yes, the book does offer insight into what the victims may have been thinking, but these are all logical conclusions. Nothing in the book is a leap. The book is extremely well written, would make a great suspense novel if it were not for the fact that all this really happened.

The book also demonstrates how police politics can hinder an investigation. Lee would have been caught years before he was had some officials listened.

This book should be mandatory reading for any future Louisiana Governor who might have to consider a stay of execution for Derrick Todd Lee. If this book sheds more light on just what a monster Lee was, then maybe his planned execution is more of a sure thing. Should also be required reading for every woman, Lee found it too easy to gain access to the homes of his victims. You'll make sure your doors are locked after reading this.

I also found a website for the book www.derricktoddlee.com Some good information there as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Monster's Story, March 17, 2006
By
Amber (Louisiana United States) - See all my reviews
In her book, I've been Watching You, Susan Mustafa enlists the help of Tony Clayton and Sue Israel to portray Derrick Todd Lee as a teeth-gnashing, heartless and depraved frame of a man who showed no remorse for his actions and selfishly gave no explanation to the victims' family members he left in his wake.

It was obvious that Mustafa walked the steps of the killer and the victims. With descriptions that could map the area, Mustafa draws pictures with her words of the terror, the crime scenes and the aftermath of each murder while keeping the victims in mind. The book holds readers by capturing their hearts, truly allowing them to know the victims and their family members. Mustafa showed that these women were wives, mothers, daughters, friends, aunts and pillars of the community in which they lived - and died.

Those who lived here while the horror was capturing the state of Louisiana will revert back to that time with remembrance of fear, but also relief that this "monster," as Mustafa labels him, is behind concrete walls in Angola. Those who didn't live here will be glad they didn't. Mustafa shows that while he definitely was tempted by a certain profile, no woman in South Louisiana was safe during his reign of terror.

Mustafa's journalism background shines in this true crime book, as she answers the questions for readers before they must ask. She tells the story as if she hovered overhead while it was happening, helpless as we all were to stop it.

Two other authors contributed their expertise to the book so much that they share the front cover with Mustafa. Tony Clayton, who supplied the insight and tactics used to convict Lee of murdering Geralyn DeSoto, was the special prosecutor in the case of the same. And Sue Israel brought 20 years of writing and editing experience to the book. Together, this "dream team" created a piece of history, detailing the horror that trapped Louisiana women for months, and unbeknownst to them, years on end. This chilling sequence of events will have women locking their doors and looking around corners for days upon its completion. In the words of victim Pam Kinnamore's mother Lynn Moreno at a book signing in Baton Rouge, "This is a story that needed to be told." These authors have done so in its entirety.
