Only Honest Review Here - DO NOT BUY,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
Before purchasing this book, I was skeptical of all the 100% glowing reviews, and went on a mission to my local bookstores to peruse this book before making the purchase on Amazon. My many local different bookstores did not stock "I've Got A Domain Name: Now What?" I decided to take the plunge anyways, and bought it on Amazon. I just received this book about half an hour ago, and now I realize why local bookstores don't stock this 'book':
It's a pamphlet. The author and the people they contracted to do the reviews here on Amazon should be ashamed. At 116 pages, in what looks like huge 24 point font, there's barely any material here. There's as much information in here as there is on one of About(.)com 's web pages, and less current. There's probably more text on the disclaimer page of a commercial drug in your magazine than in this entire book. And as for the content? Useless, irrelevant. When reading the title, you would think this book would show you all the ins and outs of making and promoting a website for business. Nope -- look at just a few examples of WHOLE CHAPTERS for this book: - CH. 1: Understanding the Domain Name System ; -- Okay, I don't know about you, but I figure someone who already has a Domain Name (as the book's title would imply) already understands this system, otherwise they would not already have a domain name. Topic in this 'chapter': "Choosing a Domain Name" (ARE YOU SERIOUS? The book is called "I've Got a Domain Name: Now What?"... and you have this topic??) - CH. 2: Registering a Domain ; -- Wow. Getting past the obvious reason why this shouldn't even be in this 'book', it pretty much lays out what the start pages of GoDaddy's ordering process would look like. Only, the writing in this book is even more technical and confusing. I was going to actually post a video of this review, and let Amazon shoppers know how little is in this 'book'. But I'm currently in my pajamas, and this drivel I ordered is not worth the effort. I also was going to really tear into this 'book' in detail, but it's just frustrating to flip through the half empty pages. The author, Jean Bedord, should really be ashamed. How could you possibly charge twenty dollars (the MSRP on the back flap is 19.99) for a pamphlet? A small free booklet at your local Small Business Administration has more information than this pamphlet. Please use the Amazon's Look Inside feature for this book, and look through the first few pages. That's it. You've pretty much seen half of this 'book'. The table of contents itself should tell you that there isn't enough here to fill a decent flyer, let alone booklet. If anyone else has bought or read through this, please post your honest review. We have to let people know that they should not waste their time here, and let us counter all the 5-star 'reviews' that Jean Bedord has paid for. I thought this would help me out, since I have some Dreamweaver books, a few entrepreneurial books on start up businesses, and a few more on actual website design. This book covers nothing. It describes what a domain is. That's it. Go to the wikipedia page for "Domain" and you will find ten times more useful information than you will in this book.

Great way to introduce someone to the basics,

This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
While this book is geared towards beginners, I'm finding that it's very useful to me when I'm talking with clients who might be confused about the basics of website development. If I'm struggling to explain something clearly, I can just pull this book off the shelf and get some ideas on how to communicate these concepts. The book even talks about search engine optimization and buying ads on Google, which are definitely areas that are of interest to new website owners. I'm going to read through it again and highlight key concepts, so I can find them again when I need them!

Very good book!,

This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
At last, I've found a good reference which explains what I need to know so I can * Consolidate, organize, and simplify my email accounts. (Mine have multiplied with time.) * Have a universal, personal email domain. This means I will no longer need to notify friends and associates that I am (what, again?) changing my email address. * Create and improve my personal/business internet presence with my own website. This book was not written for the already tech-savvy crowd, but for the rest of us. I'm glad to have the steps to follow, accompanied by important explanations. It was written for those who want to know "how things work" and those who like "do it yourself." This was the missing volume on my resource shelf!

Practical advice for anyone starting or growing a business,

This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
Years ago, one of the first things anyone did when they started a small business was to print up business cards. Today, a website and a strategy for getting people to find your website is just as important as business cards were back then. Jean Bedord's book is the perfect guide to building such a professional presence on the web.
Jean's step-by-step approach enables even a web novice to decipher the mysteries and avoid the pitfalls of working with web search engines. The chapter, "Making Your Website Findable in the Search Engines," contains advice that many of the top corporate sites would do well to absorb. One of the most powerful aspects of having a website to promote your business is the opportunity it gives even the smallest business to appear large and well-established. This book is a well-researched, well-written, and easy-to-follow guide for achieving that.

Covers Basic Info,

This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
I read the PDF version of this book and found it covered a lot of basic info. If you are new to creating your own sites and don't understand the basics of registrars, and hosting, and how to set up a site or a blog this should help answer your questions. It starts with the basics of what a domain is and how to register one. Then it has quite a bit of information about domain emails, in fact, I even learned that you can set up your gmail account with multiple emails.
This book pretty much covers everything from creating a static site to a blog using WordPress, Blogger, or Typepad. It also touches on keyword research and link building. This book seems to be intended as an overview for beginners. If someone was confused by the structure of setting up their own sites, after reading this, they would have a good idea what to research next. It's not the end all and be all of web information, but it is a nice starting point and a thorough overview that covers all the bases.

Outstanding book for getting started,
This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence is a short book packed with solid advice on building your website. Jean Bedord shares her knowledge about creating websites that are "findable" by search engines. She begins at the basics, clearly explaining how "titles", "keywords" and "webpages" all fit together. My favorite part of I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence is that Bedord provides many detailed examples. Although some of the screenshots' type font is too small. I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence is an outstanding book with scores of tips for getting started.

This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
Don't let the size of this small book deceive you. Jean Bedord has packed into her new book You have a Domain: Now What??? all the technical information you need to get started in business using a website or blog. Significantly, her book will also be valuable to anyone wishing to expand a business by creating additional websites or using the newer social network and blog technologies. We live in a complex online world in which small businesses are finding the need to create separate websites, blogs, and email address for either additional services they offer or various target markets. Bedord shows you how to do this simply. In fact, she completely demystifies the underlying technical aspects of creating websites. Some may prefer to outsource these functions while others will do it themselves. Either way, it's important and valuable to know what you can do on your own and how. Bedord offers tips, techniques, and recommendations about free or low cost services that anyone can use to begin and this book is great for those wishing to:
* Learn the underlying technology and techniques for establishing one website or several. * Separate multiple business and personal interests by creating more than one website. * Create email addresses for various purposes and forward all incoming mail to just one email address. * Develop websites and blogs for the purpose of marketing and promoting your business with methods explained about how your site can be found by others.

This review is from: I've Got a Domain Name--Now What???: A Practical Guide to Building a Website and Web Presence (Paperback)
I bought this book because I was assigned the task of researching websites in advance of revising my company's existing site. I didn't know a single thing about websites, so I bought a couple of books that sounded promising. This one far exceeded the other one I bought, for content, clarity and good writing. While I'm not looking to make a website for myself, and my company already has a web presence, I still learned a lot of the basics from this book, which is just what I was after. It doesn't cover every single thing, but it's pretty comprehensive. After reading it, I feel I would be able to start up a website on my own, if I wanted to.
