I've Got to Sing 1944-1948: The Metronome Series is yet another wonderful collection of great songs recorded by Kay Starr in the earlier days of her career. Kay is in excellent form on this CD. There's a bit of surface noise here and there but it never truly interferes with the sound. The artwork reflects good judgment, too.

"I've Got To Sing" features Kay front and center--and her excellent ability to handle those subtle tempo changes impresses me greatly. The big band arrangement also works very well for this opening number. "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm" is a stellar number when Kay sings this so sweetly; her delivery of this song is truly the definitive rendition of this classic ballad. Moreover, "It's A Great Feeling" shines like gold when Kay Starr sings it--she never misses a beat! I love that piano solo, too.

"He's Funny That Way" gets the royal treatment from Kay who sings this with all her heart and soul. I love it! Kay truly makes "He's Funny That Way" a total masterpiece. "All Of Me" sounds fresh and new when Kay sings this to perfection; and the elegant piano arrangement enhances the natural beauty of this number. There's some surface noise but this number is so well done that you just can't complain--it's all THAT good.

"Betcha I Getcha" is a peppy little tune that Kay aces easily; this is a charmer and I predict you'll enjoy this very, very much. Awesome! "Ain't Misbehavin'" places Kay Starr squarely front and center--and the string arrangement glistens like silver and gold. I always liked "Ain't Misbehavin';" and Kay's interpretation is mighty fine. Listen also for Honeysuckle Rose;" Kay performs this with all her heart and soul and again we get treated to a fine string arrangement.

"Cabin In The Sky" is a beautiful, romantic slow dance number perfect for dancing late at night with your sweetheart alone in your living room; and there's also "Them There Eyes." "Them There Eyes" is a peppy little number that Kay enhances with her excellent timing and diction. "Them There Eyes" is easily a major highlight of this CD.

"You're Always There" is yet another beautiful ballad that Kay performs to perfection--I love it! Her voice is strong, warm and very vibrant. Great!

This clearly is an album for Kay Starr fans to enjoy over and over again. People who enjoy classic pop vocals and even the "oldies" will love this album, too.

Swinging post WWII arrangements, and Kay in her early mature years.. it's a combination worth hearing over and over again. Rather than the often insipid arrangements and orchestrations she was paired up with in her later years, here we listen to actual big band jazz in perfect complimentary style to her focused and determined performance style. Her renditions of "My Future Just Passed", and "What Can I Say, After I Say I'm Sorry" transport the listener back in time to the era of great dance halls, Packards and the 21st Century Limited. If you agree that her talent is wasted on later "elevator style" arrangements, then buy this selection. You'll be glad you did.

I really enjoyed this cd. It was great hearing Kay Starr performing standards like her version of Doris Day's Absent Minded Heart and It's A Great Feeling. Joe Venuti and Kay Starr sound positively joyful on the tracks presented.
