5.0 out of 5 stars Come for the Ives, Stay for the Crumb, July 25, 2000

This review is from: Ives: 9 Songs / Crumb: Apparition (Audio CD)
This CD starts with a selection of nine songs by Ives. While they're performed with the customary skill and musicianship one expects of DeGaetani and Kalish, the real reason for purchasing this disc is the piece by George Crumb, "Apparition", written expressly for DeGaetani and Kalish.

A setting of extracts from Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd", "Apparition" is a cycle of songs and vocalises which, as the piece progresses, come together as a profound meditation on the nature of life and death, birth and growth, and ultimate redemption and peace. While their performances are consistently praiseworthy, this particular one stands as a stunning achievement for DeGaetani and Kalish. Their rapport is absolutely uncanny; they perform as one entity, driven by an informed and passionately musical intellect.

The music is direct and as emotional and involving as any you're likely to hear in the standard repertoire. If nothing else, this recording stands as a monument to one of the greatest artistic collaborations of our time: Crumb, DeGaetani and Kalish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, enchanting, heart-wrenching George Crumb songs, March 13, 2010

This review is from: Ives: 9 Songs / Crumb: Apparition (Audio CD)
I bought this disk for the George Crumb work, Apparition. I heard part of one of the songs on the BBC radio program, Desert Island Discs, and was immediately captivated by the beauty and intrigued to hear more. I was not disappointed. This is a cycle of songs where the music and its performance are both exquisite. I was enchanted by this, at times heart-wrenching, music. If I could, I would award this 10 stars and since I am not nearly as interested in the Ives songs, this disk is worth it for the Crumb alone. This is the music you could use to convert a friend who is skeptical about the beauty and lyricism of modern music.
