Book Description

December 1990
Ivon Hitchens (1893-1979) is widely regarded as the outstanding English landscape painter of the twentieth century. Immediately recognisable by its daring yet subtle use of colour and brushmark to evoke the spirit of place, his work is to be found in public and private collections throughout the world. In this, the definitive study of Hitchens' life and work now issued in a new, revised edition, Peter Khoroche draws on the painter's published writings, correspondence and conversation to create a critical reappraisal of Hitchens' theory and practice. He surveys the entire oeuvre (still-lifes, flower pieces, nudes, interiors and large-scale murals besides the landscapes), a huge legacy of work spanning sixty years, and charts the journey from conventional beginnings to 'figurative abstraction'. A new selection of over 100 colour images provide a retrospective exhibition covering Hitchens' whole career. These illustrations, examples of his best and most characteristic painting in all genres, demonstrate the artist's outstanding talents and reinforce his standing as a key figure in the history of British art.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

English painter Hitchens (1893-1979) translated his intense communion with nature into a "visual music" employing rhythm, counterpoint and echo as unifying devices. In landscapes, room interiors and still lifes he melded the discoveries of Braque and Cezanne into his own pictorial language. His sensuous, Matisse-like nudes and figure studies balance abstraction and realism. His murals--carefully orchestrated symphonies of color--create kaleidoscopic patterns of endless movement. In this extensively illustrated monograph, Khoroche, author of a catalogue of Hitchens's work, argues that the easy flow of paint and romantic emotionality belie "a painter of remarkable intellectual discipline." This is the first full-length study of an artist who resolutely went his own way, defying the trends.

Review

'it remains the most comprehensive account of his life and work and draws on much of the artist's own writings and unpublished correspondence.' Arlis 'The visuality of Hitchens is very well presented in this revised publication, which allows the work to speak eloquently about the act of painting.' --The Art Book --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Ivon Hitchens (Hardcover)
Khoroche's presentation of Hitchens's work is comprehensive and informative. The reproductions are easy to look at (not always the case), and the text is readable (not always the case, either). A useful addition to my studio reference shelf.
