More About the Author

I could tell you a whole bunch of facts about myself--born here, went to school there, blah blah--but that doesn't seem like much fun. So I've decided to make you guys do some work. If you can figure out these puzzles, you'll know all sorts of interesting things about me. And many of them are true, too.

1. I was born in a year with a 2 in it. Also a 6.
2. I was born in a city in California that begins with an S and has eight letters total.
3. The first time I moved, I couldn't move.
4. My best friend lived next door, had four older brothers and sisters, and a name that rhymes with Gabe. She had thirty-seven plastic horses and one real horse.
5. My first job was in a place with lots of books. My second job was in a place with lots of sugar. My third job was in a different place with lots of books.
6. I went to college in a town with a K in it and I studied a subject that ends in Y.
7. After I was done with college, I got a job. And then another one. And then there was one after that. Don't worry about it.
8. One of the following things is not true: I have been up in a hot air balloon. I have six toes on one of my feet. I can read palms.
9. I have written fifteen books under three different names. See if you can figure out what they are.
10. I have two pets. They are bigger than a bar of soap and smaller than a shoe, and they really like parsley.

Have fun!
Annie Barrows

The Ivy & Bean books were among the first "long" books my first-grade daughter could read on her own, and she loves them. I love that they are much better literature than the Rainbow Magic series she also adores. I'd say they are more like the Ramona books: they're not formulaic like so many modern "early chapter book" series; each book in the series tells a different engaging story. Ivy and Bean are realistic characters who have realistic relationships with their parents, neighbors, classmates, and teachers.

This boxed set was a Christmas gift much appreciated by the six-year-old recipient. The vinyl-sticker paper dolls that come with the set are very nice quality and a fun extra.

My six-year-old daughter loves to read and has recently started reading chapter books. Once she got over her obsession with the Junie B. Jones series, I managed to get her interested in the Cam Jansen series of books and then I discovered the Ivy and Bean series. My daughter loves the central characters, Bean and her best friend Ivy. The girls are precocious, intelligent, and always up to some adventure (or misadventure, depending on how one looks at it!). These traits appeal to my daughter as she is quite the adventurer herself, and the chapters are relatively short, which makes it easy for her to read independently. The books average about 100-120 pages, and she manages to read up to 40 pages per sitting (around 45 minutes).

What I found to be fascinating was that the plot for each story is so well-written and developed that my daughter could not stop once she started reading! I usually sit with her and supervise her reading, helping out with some difficult words, and she gets so involved with the story that she just keeps on reading. This to me is the mark of a good book, one that entices a young reader to keep reading. The language is not overly simplified, on the contrary, there are some challenging words which I help my daughter with (pronunciation and definition, if necessary).

The black and white illustrations that appear in each chapter add to the appeal of these books. This boxed set is a value buy since it contains three of the Ivy and Bean books, i.e. Ivy and Bean Take Care of the Babysitter, Ivy and Bean Bound to Be Bad, and Ivy and Bean Doomed to Dance. In addition, there is a bonus in the form of 2 stand-up Ivy and Bean dolls, plus four sheets of removable plastic wardrobe stickers which provide hours of fun for young children.

Just started this second set of Ivy and Bean books. My granddaughter is now 8 and still loves every single Ivy and Bean book! We already finished the first 2 books in this set and she loved these stories as much as the 3 in set #1. She was thrilled with the added bonus of the paper dolls and loved that the clothes they came with matched the illustrations in the books! We have 1 book left in this set and have just discovered there are 2 more books, 1 available now and one coming out in Oct 2011. I agree with the other reviewer who said she wished this series of books had 100 books available! For now we are happy with our first 6 and can't wait to get our next 2! I am so pleased that the children portrayed in these books are well behaved and are being taught good manners!

I bought this boxed set for my daughter for Christmas and she absolutley loved it. Because the set was heavier than her other gifts, she was convinced to open this first. She screamed with delight because she wanted the set for a while and read the books in one day. This resulted in some quiet time in the morning, which is unusual for a Christmas morning!
My daughter also gave me the breaksown of what happened in each book. These books engage children who may not be great lovers of reading. The books are written to grasp children's attention and engages them becuase these are things that they think about and do. After reading the books, my daughter asked for the others in the series.

My Niece who wanted these so badly, was So Very Pleased to get these for Christmas. This writer writes in a style that even adults enjoy reading. I know because my son couldn't put one of the books down until he had finished it. And he is 40 years old. I too like her style of writing. And these books through Amazon were at such an affordable price, I was able to get her 2 sets. And this caused her to widen her eyes when she saw both of them even more. Both sets of these books arrived even before the estimated date, and were very well packaged. I am very Pleased with this purchase.

My daughter loves these books - they were a great set of first chapter books for her, and the characters and stories were fun enough that it was enjoyable to read with her. Some other chapter books aimed at this age group seem to promote "bad behavior" or go for the cheap potty humor, but I like realistic scenarios in these books that aren't preachy but gently show that some times you win some, sometimes you lose some, but most of the time things turn out ok, especially when you have a really great friend to share with.
