4.0 out of 5 stars This is it.
For everyone out there wondering if this is the CD that includes the infamous "Bell Jar" song from 10 Things That I Hate About You, this is it. The title of the song is "Calypso", and it is amazing. It starts off something like, "sunshine on my window....makes me happy...like I should be....but outside ... all around me..." Definitely a...

2.0 out of 5 stars Some absolute gems...
First of all, let me say I'd prefer to rate this album 2.5 stars... i haven't boosted the rating to 3 because I happen to be one of those people who is sick of seeing every album rated 5 out of 5... let's face it, a 5-star rating should be reserved for the best albums and used sparingly... a 2.5 rating in my book is basically: 'pretty good, but could have been...

5.0 out of 5 stars diversity + attitude + brains = a smash!, March 13, 2000

This disc is amazing. I was introduced to the band via a chat room and have since become their unofficial #1 Canadian fan. Too bad more people aren't aware of their greatness... whenever I sample these guys to my friends they love it, and 'Calypso' has become an underground hit amongst the people I hang around... if you love these guys and no one knows who they are, TELL THEM! I'm a big fan of every song on this disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Top Band... There's Just Gonna Get Bigger, October 20, 1999

I was first introduced to Spiderbait after reading a recomendation on a webpage.. complete luck that i found it.. otherwise i could be sat at home now listenig to my old stuff - bored. Being from England i'd never heard of the band. The originality and diversity is what's going to make them a huge INTERNATIONAL success. I love songs such as buy me pony, but also the instrumental ones too

5.0 out of 5 stars These guys should be more famous than they are!, July 17, 1999

This CD is just a sampling of the greatness that is Spiderbait. As stated in an earlier review, I would recommend checking out their other stuff (esp Grand Slam), however this CD really rocks - and not in an incessant bs 'alternative' way, but with songs of originality, power and attitude. THIS band is Australia's next great export - the Oils have made their mark, so let's make some room for SPIDERBAIT! This is 'alternative', but the best by far I have heard - and they leave a lot of US 'indie/alternative' bands for dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars WE WANT MORE!!!!!, June 22, 1999

American music could use some of the life that this CD has in it. Why don't they tour here, they're better than 99% of the current US band slop. Love 'Buy Me A Pony'...no wonder it was voted #1 in the '97 Triple J Hot 100!

Spiderbait's Ivy and the big Apples is a fantastic album for all alt. music freeks. Song such as Buy me a pony and Joyce's hut both ranked extreamly well in Triple J's hottest 100 and both are awsome songs. This album is a must buy and look out for more of Spiderbait as they are sure to make it big in the future.

Don't get me wrong... I'm definitely a 'bait fan... but I bought this album on the strength of 'Calypso', 'Hot Water and Milk' and 'Buy Me A Pony'... and hoped that the rest of it would be just as good. Unfulfilled hopes, unfortunately...

The aforementioned three songs are absolutely brilliant... in fact, they are so good that it was worth buying the album... especially everyone's fave, 'Calypso'..

but the rest of the album is rather bland... 'Joyce's Hut' is alright, if a little repetitive... 'Goin' off' is quite funny... but these highlights are few and far between.

I have to say, I was disappointed by this album. But if you haven't checked out Australian music before, you'll be pleasantly surprised by some of the terrific bands.. if you have the time, I'd suggest you check out Jebediah, Regurgitator, Grinspoon, as well as the 'bait...

4.0 out of 5 stars Guitars, drums, beat and energy. Simple formula = Great CD, March 24, 2006

This is a great cd that ages very well with enough diversity to keep the album fresh.
Seems like everybody likes "Calypso" and I don't blame them. I was actually surprised when I heard it in some Bruce Willis movie, but I don't think it is the stand out song of the album. I can't go past the raw energy of "Don't Kill Nipper" and "Horschack Army". "Chest Hair", "Goin' Off" and "Driving Up The Ceiling" also are winners.
I am a guitarist, but I play Flamenco. Spiderbait (this cd in particular) takes me back to the amp and the overdrive. They have a simple formula (drums, guitar and bass) but they they hit the notes at the right times with right balance of sound.
If you search for the lyrics of "Glokenpop" from their "Grand Slam" album, it will sum up Spiderbait for you. Simple and very effective.

4.0 out of 5 stars Catch That Spider and Put it in Your Collection!, September 3, 2003

This is a good fun album. Buy Me a Pony and Calypso you will know if you own a radio, but they're not the only good songs on here. Hot Water & Milk, Goosh and Joyce's Hut are also great, just to name a few. Interestingly half of the tracks on this album do not contain lyrics at all. This makes them excellent to have on as back ground music when you're doing something important and don't want to be distracted by words. They also would be good if you were making home videos or something to have on in the background. This is not a bad album,...

Good Album. "Buy Me a Pony" and "Calypso" are excellent songs. "Grand Slam" is the Best. Amazon don't have it on the list but I'm telling you now, it rocks!
