4.0 out of 5 stars Swifty Mcvay Steps Out Of D-12's Shadow For A Solid Release, January 4, 2010
This review is from: Iwannacatchacase [Explicit] (MP3 Download)
First off, I have to admit: I've always been a fan of D-12. Their over the top lyrics and album conceptions have always kept me engaged, and they never fail to disappoint when they release some new material. However, I always did question the ability of each group member to go off solo and do their own album. They're all great as a group, but are they good enough to stand alone? Fellow group member Bizarre was one of the first to step out and do his thing with 'Hannicap Circus', but this album was forgettable and of poor quality. His second solo release 'Blue Cheese & Coney Island', while an improvement, didn't really stand out either. Deceased group member Proof also came out with a solo effort entitled 'Searching for Jerry Garcia', which was actually pretty good and restored my faith in the rest of the group. So when I heard Swifty was working on a record, I decided to keep an open mind.

So the real question is if Swifty can step out of D-12's shadow and hold it on his own. After hearing his new album 'IWannaCatchACase', I can honestly say that he is a great solo artist. He delivers an album that can hold up to other rap albums being released today, but its a shame Swifty's wont get as much exposure. There are many positives to this album that really make it worth while, but there are also some negatives. Here's a list of each so you know what to expect:

PROS:
- Incredible lyricism in each track, making even the 'worst songs' listenable.
- Solid production with each instrumental.
- Each track holds up with the albums concept.
- Doesn't cop out to the 'mainstream sound' heard on the radio everyday.

CONS:
- While the production is hot, it would have been better to hear a greater variety of beats.
- Speaking of variety, most of the songs are just hard-core records. Wish he made more personal songs like 'Cursed'.
- Since he doesn't switch subject matter much, the album almost over stays its welcome. Tracks like 'They Watchin' Me' and 'Bitch Playin' Tricks' weren't necessary.
-At least one collaboration would have been nice.

OVERALL CONSENSUS:
Swifty's album doesn't come without flaws, but what rap album doesn't? Swifty gives us a strong solo release and proves to us that he can hold his own as an artist. I hope his next record has more variety, but I think he'll learn from this release. If Swifty ever decides to step out of D-12's shadow again for a sophomore album, I'll be here to listen.

RATING: 4/5
