This superb 144 page volume was reprinted in a paperback edition in 2008 as "Essential Yoga: The Practical Step-by-Step Course." This introductory guide is based upon Iyengar's 1966 book "Light On Yoga."

- The volume presents precise instruction and practical advice supported by numerous color photographs. Most postures are shown with four to seven photos, with modifications usually shown for those with less flexibility.
- Each posture is presented on a separate page, and postures are organized by type (Standing, Seated, Twists, Inverted, Spine and Prone). Poses are presented in order of increasing difficulty.
- A chapter on routines presents 27 sequences that are each introduced by a paragraph explaining the intent or theme of the practice.
- Interestingly, the chapter "Therapeutic Yoga" presents routines designed to address conditions such as mental fatigue, colds, headaches, stress, insomnia, asthma, sciatica, menstruation, etc.

Bottom line: This book is an exceptionally clear guide for students who want help to progress. The book explains tips to aid body alignment and to hold postures for longer periods of time. When talking about the benefits of particular poses, the content occasionally feels to me a bit like "true believer" posturing that lacks support to make a case to skeptics. However, the instructional content is precise and helpful. The 400+ photos are clear and well composed.

As a new student of yoga I was looking for a book which explains and teaches the Iyengar Yoga method. This book is concise and packed with great information. The illustrations are easy to follow and the narrative easy to understand. The author goes through painstaking care to assist an individual in establishing proper yoga technique in developing a home practice. This book has already made a difference as I use it when I am doing my home practice and not able to be in a yoga class receiving live instruction. I would recommend this book without reservation.

I suggest this book to all my students who are looking to do more outside of class.
