A great gift, this set provides a cook with enough versatility to accomplish most kitchen jobs. The chef's knife, with its broad blade and curved cutting edge for rocking through a chopping task, chops, minces, slices, and dices. The utility knife slices, cuts, and chops; its 5-inch blade is large enough to trim a chuck roast or subdue a head of lettuce. The paring knife cuts, peels, and cleans fruits and vegetables. Henckels's International Fine Edge is an inexpensive cutlery line made in countries other than the company's home of Germany. These knives don't have bolsters, and their blades are thinner and less strong than those of the company's premier lines. Handles are narrower and shallower, as well--a feature those with small hands might appreciate. --Fred Brack

Purchased these to go with a 7 inch Henckels International santoku that I've been using for years, and the phrase that comes to mind to describe all Fine Edge cutlery is "good enough." No, it isn't restaurant quality, and yes, if you put these through the dishwasher they'll tarnish and probably even start to rust (any metal designated as "stainless" is rust resistant rather than rust proof, and reviewers of other Henckels products complaining about rust and tarnish probably aren't treating their knives very well). As a graduate student on a budget who enjoys cooking, but doesn't always have the time for it, these knives are an ideal compromise between price and quality. Be aware that they will occasionally require sharpening - I've had the santoku for almost three years and run it through a commercially available ceramic disk sharpener every few months and it still cuts very nicely - and should probably be hand-washed for longest life. With that little bit of maintenance, however, this three piece set can meet nearly all of your cooking needs (it meets all of mine, but then I don't often dress poultry, filet my own fish, or do much that would require a cleaver or really subtle boning knife) for quite a nice price.

Having sharp, quality knives in the kitchen is essential. I have owned this set for a couple years and it is still in great shape. Good form, easy to hold and they stay sharp with the right care.

I'm a senior in college that has recently moved into my first apartment - and obviously needed to get some kitchen essentials without breaking my very malnourished bank account. I came across these - three Henckels knives at a pretty decent price - and decided to go with it. The knives are amazing - I only wish I could find a good yet cheap knife sharpener to go along with it as they (like any other knives) will lose their fine sharp edge after continued use without sharpening. If you're looking for a cheap and essential knife set with good quality - this is the product for you.

I haven't tried the knives...they are a gift. What I am upset about is that in the description of the knives it says they offer stamped high-carbon German stainless steel blades. I specifically purchased them because it said this. They arrived and it's imprinted on the knives "Made in Thailand". Going back to the description on website, you must scroll all the way to the bottom where it has an "Amazon" product description that says they are made in other countries than Germany and are a more inexpensive knife. Very misleading and not sure why it would say German made within the main description. Misleading representations of this nature keep me from wanting to do business on Amazon.

I got these when moving into a new apartment and having my own kitchen for the first time. Along with the Fine Edge Pro bread knife I got this seemed like a good starter set for a new kitchen. I don't have a huge amount of experience with knives, so I won't go too in depth.

They were sharp enough to use right out of the box, which is nice, though they were greatly improved with a few minutes of sharpening.
The 3 sizes are quite handy. I use the chef's knife for most things, but the other two are handy when trimming meat or needing more detail and control than I can get from the larger chef's knife.
The handles are about right for my hand size with no sharp edges, and the little tail helping my hand no slip out when slick.

The downside, they don't seem to stay sharp long. Some knives I've used before I only sharpened a couple times a year, these, I sharpen, or should sharpen, every month or two. I don't know if this relates to how often I use these versus the ones before or the quality of the edge and steel.
Also, I sometimes like to use a hand on top of the blade to help with pressure, and the top edge is rather sharp. I fixed this rather easily with a stone, but it is worth noting.
Finally, the chef's knife seems a bit thin at times. When I am cutting hard vegetables like potatoes the blade will tend to bend a bit, making it sometimes hard to get straight, precise cuts when I want to.

Over all a good starter knife set for a beginning cook.

Good knives are a must in any kitchen. Seriously, bad knives get people hurt; while sharp knives prevent accidents by requiring much less force to cut things. These aren't amazing knives by any stretch of the imagination; but they are reasonably priced, come in three useful sizes, and are good enough that you won't cut your thumb so badly while making squash to take to a thanksgiving potluck, that even after the cut has healed, 7 years later there will still be a numb patch on the back of your thumb.

Learn from me. Buy these knives and save your hands.

They arrived sharp and ready to use. This is the second set of them I have bought. My first set has seen many years of daily use and is still in great shape. I have bought this set of knives to give as a gift on numerous occasions.

I have a set of knives that were less expensive, that hold an edge better than these do. They aren't particularly bad, they just aren't as good as my El Cheapo ones that I already had.
