From Publishers Weekly

Four residents of a seaside retirement complex in Southern California investigate the murder of a friend in this lively and entertaining mystery. A former librarian, "Sweetie" was neither sweet nor popular, but her sudden violent death inspires curiosity in the imposing breast of the well-to-do and imperious Caledonia. She, coy Angela, quiet Nan and the decorous Stella give up craft classes and bridge games to discover why Sweetie was killed. A nighttime foray into her apartment reveals she'd been blackmailing other residents of Camden-sur-Mer, many of whom turn out to have secrets they'd pay to keep hidden. A second murder ensues, and the detective in charge begs the ladies to leave the case to himto no avail. Relying on gossip, a growing taste for adventure and the considerable wisdom of their age, they finally reach the bittersweet solution to the mystery. Neither sentimental nor patronizing, this tale of geriatric adventure is as heartwarming as a glass of Caledonia's sherry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Let the Title Fool You!, June 5, 2003
This title was on my list of books to read for a long time before I ever got around to reading it. However, now that I have read it, I am sorry that I waited so long! Don't let the title keep you from reading this book.

The residents of a retirement community (not a nursing home!) have a murderer in their midst. No one really liked "Sweetie" but everyone agrees that there was no reason to kill her! Friends Caledonia and Angela mastermind the search to find the killer, and get themselves into a few precarious situations as a result. This book shows that retirement does not mean "out to pasture" and shows how valuable the elderly are (to those that, unfortunately, need a reminder!).

This was a delightful look at a feisty group of retirement residents that work together to help the police solve a murder. The characters grow with each book in the series and this book was a great introduction to them. Great for all ages! Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars First novel in the series, August 7, 2009

(REAL NAME)
Four ladies in a California retirement community are justifiably shocked when one of the residents is killed on the community grounds. Angela, Caledonia, Nan, and Stella decide to "help" with the murder investigation, much to the frustration of the professional law officers. The victim was a lady called Sweetie who, as the truth is uncovered, was anything but sweet. Corinne Holt Sawyer develops some delightful characters in this first novel of the series and keeps things lively in this enjoyable cozy mystery.
