4.0 out of 5 stars Poignant and Timely, August 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: J.B. Priestly: Last of the Sages (PBK) (Paperback)
In this wonderful literary biography, John Atkins reviews John Boynton Priestly's long and productive career, spanning from his migration from Yorkshire to London after his service in the first world war to his later works up to 1980. Atkins gives a detailed analysis of Priestly the man, his character and his work, including his poetry, plays, essays, novels, biographies, and critical works. Special attention is given to Priestly's provincial origins, his voluminous literary output, the uneven quality of his work, his times, and the personal nature oh his work. Although there is less biographical material here than one would hope for, this book may well be considered the definitive source of literary critiques for this most neglected writer of the twentieth century.
