Book Description

0415344530 978-0415344531 April 20, 2007 New

J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951) is a twentieth-century classic. Despite being one of the most frequently banned books in America, generations of readers have identified with the narrator, Holden Caulfield, an angry young man who articulates the confusion, cynicism and vulnerability of adolescence with humour and sincerity.

This guide to Salinger’s provocative novel offers:

  • an accessible introduction to the text and contexts of The Catcher in the Rye
  • a critical history, surveying the many interpretations of the text from publication to the present
  • a selection of new critical essays on the The Catcher in the Rye, by Sally Robinson, Renee R. Curry, Denis Jonnes, Livia Hekanaho and Clive Baldwin, providing a range of perspectives on the novel and extending the coverage of key critical approaches identified in the survey section
  • cross-references between sections of the guide, in order to suggest links between texts, contexts and criticism
  • suggestions for further reading.

Part of the Routledge Guides to Literature series, this volume is essential reading for all those beginning detailed study of The Catcher in the Rye and seeking not only a guide to the novel, but a way through the wealth of contextual and critical material that surrounds Salinger’s text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's clarify this confusion!, September 15, 2010
This review is from: J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye: A Routledge Study Guide (Routledge Guides to Literature) (Paperback)
I'm sorry to hear that anyone bought this book thinking it was the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger. It does say on the cover "J. D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye", which does hint that it is about the novel, not the novel itself, and Amazon describe it as "A Routledge Study Guide" at the top of the page, but I can understand that - at a glance - it might be easy to miss these things. The problem is that to give this book 1 star because it is not the book you think it is seems unfair to me. Worse, implying that it must be rubbish because of an ambiguous title is especially unkind! If you read it and don't think it is a good study guide, fair enough - rate it accordingly. If you have bought it in error, please raise that issue with Amazon, rather than expressing your frustration in the form of a bad review of a book you haven't actually read. Spare a thought for the author - me! - getting 1 star ratings because of the Kindle!

By the way, I haven't rated this book at 5 stars because I'm an ego-maniac, but just in attempt to draw attention to the issue - and, yes, maybe raise the average rating for the book just a little!

3.0 out of 5 stars Check the Title, January 30, 2010
This is a study guide, not the novel. I'm usually not impreesed by study guides but that in-and-of-itself doesn't make it bad (aka one star). However, the fact that Kindle includes study guides (as I think it should) does put an added burden on buyers to see what s/he is actually buyimg.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this over a wireless device and did not realize that it was not the novel AND companion notes. After skimming this I had no novel and blown 15 Bucks. On the PC monitor I can see now why I should have known that this was not the novel also. Just word to the Ipod people.
