Brian Holden Reid Reid explores Major-General J.F.C. Fuller's formative experiences, showing how his early life, his service in the Boer War and in India, and his friendships with many alienated intellectuals, including Aleister Crowley, combined to shape his mental outlook and, eventually, his study of the phenomenon of war.

5.0 out of 5 stars Analysis & Tribute to a Great Military Thinker, February 6, 2012

This book is not a biography. It may be the best critical analysis of J. F. C. Fuller's career as a military thinker. Fuller's life is examined in terms of how events and people may have shaped his professional outlook on the theory of military warfare. This is an interpretive study on a high academic level that tells the reader what Fuller thought and possibly why. And then the author looks at arguments and controversies pro and con. He generally favors Fuller and softens criticism against him.

This is a documented study backed up by 24 pages of footnotes, a valuable one page bibliographic essay on writings about Fuller, and a 6 page bibliography on modern war.

The author is a professor at King's College, London (England) specializing in War Studies. His command of the subject and a clear, expository writing style makes this book both a pleasure and a necessity for the student of modern military studies.
