The illustrations on every page are done in a medley of shades ranging from bright green to deep purple. About the Author

Denise Brennan-Nelson s boundless energy and enthusiasm come from her days as a motivational speaker. Since the publication of her first children s picture book, Buzzy the bumblebee in 1999, Denise has taken that enthusiasm into schools and inspired thousands of children to bee-lieve in themselves. She is also the author of My Teacher Likes to Say and My Momma Likes to Say, two humorous books that examine the many idioms and clichés teachers and mothers use; and Penny: The Forgotten Coin, which traces one penny's journey through history. Denise lives in Howell, Michigan, with husband Bob and their two daughters, Rebecca and Rachel.

Born in Hong Kong, Donald Wu grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. He studied illustration at the California College of the Arts. Donald's current focus is in children's book illustration, but he also has experience with portraiture and editorial artwork. He lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

Written by Denise Brennan-Nelson and illustrated by Donald Wu, "J is for Jack-O'-Lantern" is a spooky Halloween alphabet book for preschool ages and older. Filled with seasonal rhymes, full page colorful illustrations, and informative sidebars with educational commentary to be used for additional learning, "J Is for Jack-O'-Lantern" is just the right combination of spooky and fun to appeal to kids. In addition, significant information about the Celtic history of the Halloween holiday is presented in the sidebars. Ideas for fun Halloween games and recipes for treats such as Deviled egg eyeballs are also included. Also at the end of the book are two pages of Halloween Tricks and Treats, which include some Ghostly riddles. Altogether a fun and imaginative presentation, "J is for jack-O'-Lantern" fills the bill for a fresh takes on both alphabet and Halloween lore.

I was attracted to this book as a parent because it has great illustrations and revolve around the alphabet. My daughter loves it but there is a lot of information about this time of year that even older children can enjoy. It goes into great detail about everything in Fall from the pigment of the leaves to how long scarecrows have been used, but there is a short rhyme for younger children and those with shorter attention spans.

Good book. Great for all times of the year.
