J.K. Adams: A 2nd-Generation, Family-Owned Company

Kitchen storage solutions by J.K. Adams make it easy to save on valuable kitchen space while enjoying the best of USA-made craftsmanship. The family-owned company provides everything from pot hooks and spice bottles to wooden spice carousels, kitchen-knife blocks, bread boxes, wine racks, pot racks, and more. J.K. Adams' wooden kitchen items feature renewable and sustainable wood in Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Alder, Ash, or Hickory varieties. A thoughtful choice for gift giving, the high-quality kitchen items provide sleek designs and convenient functionality for year after year of everyday convenience.

Innovative Kitchen-Storage Solutions

In the late-1970's, when the gourmet-chef-tools market in the U.S. was still in its infancy, J.K. Adams owner Malcolm Cooper, Sr. conceived of the first slanted knife block. His goal was to create a cutlery organizer that would hold knives at a low enough angle that they could be easily removed from the block when it was pushed back under a cabinet overhang. The J.K. Adams Kangaroo knife block was launched in 1980--the first-ever slanted knife block, and still the best.

Recognizing the many opportunities to improve kitchen storage, J.K. Adams introduced the revolving "carousel" spice rack in 1982 followed by countless other well-designed storage products in the years since, including the popular in-drawer knife tray in 1994, a space-saving alternative to the knife block that offers the same safety and blade protection.

In 2011, J.K. Adams takes cutlery storage to a new level once again with the new Universal knife block. For over 30 years, J.K. Adams has continued to lead and inspire the kitchen storage market with their innovative designs, superior hardwoods, and exemplary craftsmanship.

Today, J.K. Adams continues to provide innovative designs, superior hardwoods, and high-quality craftsmanship.

J.K. Adams: Over 65 Years of New England Yankee Craftsmanship

Some of the world's finest woodworkers can be found in New England. The rich heritage and folklore of the great Yankee Woodworker is as well known today as it was hundreds of years ago, and the craft has been handed down through the generations. J.K. Adams' success is certainly attributable to the early Vermonters employed by the company while in its infancy who brought forth the techniques and quality craftsmanship that could only come from generations of shared knowledge and experience.

The J.K. Adams factory has been at the same location since the beginning. As many as three generations of families have relied on J.K. Adams to provide for their families. Located in a rural area of Vermont, J.K. Adams remains one of the largest employers in the area and is an important pillar of support for the local community.

J.K. Adams has always used the creativity and skill of their workforce in developing new products, and today J.K. Adams continues its New England craftsmanship with a wide variety of cutting boards, as well as wooden salad bowls, kitchen islands, and slate serving trays. And at the J.K. Adams factory, you'll find future generations of woodworkers building upon the traditions begun over 65 years ago.

Cutting boards and other products by J.K Adams are made in the North America.

About J.K. Adams' Logo

In colonial New England, three strokes of a broad ax were used to mark the finest trees in the forest for the Queens' Navy shipmasts. The broad arrow was adopted as our logo because it symbolizes the exceptional quality of wood that goes into our products.

J.K. Adams' Company History

  • Started over 65 years ago in a small garage in Dorset, Vermont
  • Cooper family purchased business from founder Josiah K. Adams in 1949
  • Began with the Speedy Racer toy, and then followed by manufacturing drafting and surveying tables, Kiwi shoe groomers, gifts, and furniture
  • Now the leading supplier of wooden storage and food preparation products for the specialty housewares industry

Our Wood

  • Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Alder, Ash, and Hickory
  • Either from New England or other North American sources
  • Renewable and sustainable
  • Hard and durable, yet forgiving to knife edges

Wood Grains

End Grain
  • Prized for look and longest wear
  • Identifiable by small pieces put together
  • Board usually thick and heavy
  • Many pieces, lots of glue joints, cracking can be a problem
Edge Grain
  • Most common in cutting boards
  • Moderate grain pattern
  • Stable with minimum glue joints

Why Choose a Wood Cutting Board?

Wood is naturally anti-bacterial, and any bacteria left on the board will actually lessen in time versus multiplying on a plastic cutting board. A wooden board will also be more gentle on your knife's edge, and it just feels and sounds better under a knife.

Caring for Your J.K. Adams Cutting Board

Wash by hand in warm soapy water and dry thoroughly, and oil frequently with mineral oil to help give it an optimal appearance. Do not soak, microwave, freeze, or put in the dishwasher. For removing stains, you can use a weak bleach-and-water solution or a combination of lemon juice and salt. Be sure to rinse and wipe with mineral oil afterward. Additionally, the surface can be sanded to make the board look like new--although a board with wear will add character to your kitchen. For storage, keep the board away from strong sunlight as avoiding UV rays will reduce the risk of fading.

Environmental Responsibilities

  • We only purchase lumber from a select few suppliers who we are confident practice sustainable forestry practices
  • Vermont forests are growing faster than they are being harvested
  • J.K. Adams has been awarded the Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence

I'm very pleased with this rolling pin. I like the slight curve, as it gives me much more control over shaping the dough. The quality seems good for the price, however, be aware that the pin is not cut from the center of the log, but along the grain, like ordinary lumber. I don't know what this means in terms of the roller's longevity -- will it warp? split? -- but for the money, it's worth the gamble.

It arrived with the surface a bit rough, so I sanded it down with a sanding sponge (sandpaper should work just as well), and this gave the surface a glacial smoothness. I avoid washing it immersed in water and simply clean it with a damp sponge. I don't want water soaking into it, because continual soaking and drying might encourage it to split. I am not oiling it as I worry about a greasy build-up. Only time will tell how well my "keep-it-dry" method works. (I never oiled my standard rolling pin either, which is decades old and still going strong, and although it was washed immersed in water, it never split. BUT it was cut from the center of the log.)

So far, the roller earns 5 stars from me. I will update this review if needed.

UPDATE: See COMMENTS for remarks on curve of rolling pin.

J.K. Adams FRP-1 Maple French Rolling Pin

I have been using the straight ones and the ones with handles for a while, but IMHO curvy (tapered) pins and this one in particular are a lot more convenient to use.

With the handles, the pin might not roll when you need it to, and more pressure might get your work-of-art slide here and there sometimes.
With the straight pin, everything's fine except that you still need to manually adjust the rough edges especially on shortcrust dough.
With tapered pin, and with the appropriate technique using the ends in an oblique and 1/4 of a circle motion, rounding standard 28 cm crusts is a breeze.

Measurement of center straight (not tapered) section: 20.5 - 2 x 5.5 = 9.5 inches. Seems short on paper, but no problem on the job, great for rounding edges in fact, with a smooth angle.

Order, delivery, finish (surface) were perfect. Using it mostly for shortcrust pastry, beating up the kids and the butter for puff pastry.
... just kidding, I'm using a pizza peel for the kids :-)

I was on the hunt for an identical but shorter length item. I found (and bought) an 11 inches bamboo one, not tapered, but does the trick for tartlets and Asian dough wrapped goodies.

So much for a piece of wood, you wouldn't believe.

P.S.: Looks like the kids joke tanked with some readers, LOL! Check the comments ...

I originally had a marble rolling pin (with wooden handles) but this fine specimen of maple is so awesome it has replaced my original rolling pin. Based on the experience I've got with my J.K. Adams maple cutting board, I gave it a generous coat of mineral oil almost immediately to prevent it from drying and (potentially) cracking.

I post this review after using this rolling pin for about two years now since I bought it from Amazon. This is genuinely a great value rolling pin made from solid maple in Vermont, USA. I have no cracks or splits yet, even though I use it fairly often to roll dough for all sorts of recipes that require hand rolling. The feel is solid and smooth. I think for about ten dollars this is just about a real bargain. Recommended.

This rolling pin appears to be well made. The tapered ends are symmetrical. Each end is flat with a narrow bevel around the edge. The finish is smooth but not super smooth. The reason I know this is because I happened to see the OXO version at Whole Foods.

The finish of the OXO is super smooth, noticeably smoother that this JK Adams. The OXO has rounded ends and it's also thicker, maybe 2 inches in diameter. The extra smoothness is nice but I'm not sure I like the thickness of the OXO.

Anyway, I had already received this J.K. Adams pin and I like its narrower shaft. I can always use some fine sandpaper to increase the smoothness if I want to. I've used the pin several times though and a smoother finish would only be cosmetic. I wash mine quickly with mild dish soap and water and dry it with a towel; still looks like new.

This was my 1st time using a French-style rolling pin. It took a little getting used to, but once you understand how to apply pressure outward as you roll in a circular motion, you can roll out a pie or pizza crust effortlessly. I had the technique pretty much figured out by the end of the 1st pie crust I made with it, so I would say the learning curve is pretty shallow.

I would suggest hand washing if you use it regularly and get some food-grade mineral oil (also available here on Amazon) and I would expect this to last for many years. If you wash it in the dishwasher I would apply the mineral oil every time.

I got this after my first year of culinary school and I still love it. I prefer the French style because I can control how my dough stretches out by digging in. I occasionally oil it with food grade mineral oil to keep it from drying out.
