This book is well worth the 12 or so dollars you spend, you will recoup it so quickly with all the deductions you were previously unaware you were entitled to. And it's so easy to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good information but nothing groundbreaking May 3, 2012

1,0001 deductions? I'm sure someone was using fuzzy accounting when summing up that total. I purchased this book to help me plan for my taxes for next year. I had already done some investigating online so I was decently familiar with all the available deductions. I was hoping that this book would show a deduction that I didn't know I qualified for or something that wasn't being used. It didn't. In fact, all of the information in this book can be found on the web for free. In fact, if you want all the details on a certain deduction (exclusions, etc), you have to look it up online anyway.

Now, that's not to say you don't need this book. I have given it a neutral rating because the information it does provide is essential to determine whether you qualify for the deductions or not. The information is all in one place instead of looking it up piecemeal through countless websites. It describes the tests involved to determine if you qualify for the deduction. It shows MAGI phase-outs that are not always shown on some websites. This would have helped me had I not found out the hard way that some credits and deductions are now phasing out in much lower income brackets than anticipated. It also describes the percentages and gives good examples on how to claim the deductions it covers. Also, the advice on retirement accounts is top-notch. You can find it elsewhere but it is described nicely in this book. I'm not sure about the business section since it doesn't pertain to me. In fact, a lot of this book does not pertain to most people in the audience that it is geared for.

So, if you're looking for a good reference with some solid examples and phase-outs of the current tax deductions this book is for you. If you're looking for advice on whether to get a 401k, whether tuition is deductible, and how much you may claim for certain deductions this book is also for you. If you're looking for excruciating details or something that you think you may not know about, I'm thinking this book is not for you. Anyone who has used H&R tax cut would be familiar with the deductions but this book may supplement your knowledge if you've never looked it up outside of these programs. It may also help you ferret out deductions you qualify for when using these programs but it's not a silver bullet to dropping your tax burden. Most of us already know the tricks that are available to middle-class families who are not business owners.
