This review is from: J. M. W. Turner: `A Wonderful Range of Mind` (Paperback)
Unfinished, studied neglect, poetic imagination, hastily painted...all this and more has been said of Turner's work. Turner was the most adventurous and intellectual artist of his generation in England. No art education is complete without an understanding of his contribution and influence. John Gage has produced a readable and comprehensive volume. Large in format at 11.25 x 10", it is well laid out and well illustrated. US readers may be slightly annoyed that all dimensions are given in metric because we think in inches. 92 x 123 cm. leaves us uninformed and requires a conversion. 92 x 123 times .4 equals 36 x 49". Close enough; the actual conversion factor is .3937 in/cm. Much of his work borders on the abstract, brought back from the edge with a minimum of recognizable shape. I have included a reference to Turner in my book Real Art Real Easy, available on Amazon. If you appreciate Turner you will most likely enjoy John Henry Twachtman as well.
