This product is not the original book, The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkein, it is a dramatization of the book written by Patricia Gray.

Dramatized version... look out!,

This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
This is Patricia Gray's dramatization of The Hobbit, authorized by Tolkien. It is NOT his book. As such, it would make a decent elementary or junior high level play, for which it is clearly intended. Unfortunately, I bought this version thinking it was the actual book, perhaps illustrated by Ms. Gray.Enjoyable for the low-tech costume and scenic suggestions (Gollum in a wetsuit with swimming goggles for eyes).

I've finally read it, Fern!,

This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
I have a friend who for years tried to get me to read the Tolkien books. She fell in love with them in the 70s when they were very popular and wanted to share them with everyone. I'm not really into narrative prose-although I occasionally read a murder mystery of the classic "who-done-it" type-so I have never read the books, Fern's efforts not withstanding. When the recent Peter Jackson film Lord of the Rings came out, I was very taken with the trailers for it and decided to see what all of the hullabaloo was about. Needless to say, like many people, I was totally taken with the color, the scenery, the characters and the adventure of the movie. I decided to read some of the books before the advent of the next film, The Two Towers, so that I could be better prepared to enjoy and appreciate it. My first venture into Tolkien's style has been The Hobbit or There and Back Again. The book is charming, though somewhat simple in narrative style, very like a children's fairy tale or just-so story. It suffers little for that, however, and is quick and entertaining reading; I got through it in two days despite a heavy personal schedule. The story is of the personal adventures of Bilbo Baggins of Baggins' End, a Hobbit-sort of a small hominid with furry feet-as he attempts to vanquish a dragon who holds a distant kingdom in thrall and to restore the Dwarf ruler Thorin to his patrimony. It describes all manner of adventures on the way, including meetings with giants, two groups of elves, goblins, a shape shifting human, and a creature of unknown affiliation called Gollum, who is one of my favorite characters. What impressed me most about this book was the remarkable degree to which the author was familiar with his imaginary environment and it's characters. Not only are the settings and the individuals peopling it described in detail, the author is able to say that such and such is to the "north" or on the "right or left" of something else. One has the distinct feeling that the author has himself "been there" many times. It almost makes me want to read something about the man whose mind was so fertile it held an entire world within it. A charming book, well worth reading. Thank you Fern, however belatedly.

A tale of fantasy and adventure,
By Calvin W Emberton Sr (Greensburg, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
This story is a tale of fantasy that took place before man dominated and controlled the Earth. In a world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, an adventurous Bilbo Baggins (a Hobbit and the main character) joins some bearded elves and Gandalf (a wizard) in his journey through Middle Earth. Along the way the band of unlikely companions run into many perils. The adventures include encounters with elves, dragons, wolves, giant spiders, giant eagles, and goblins. Bilbo Baggins finds a ring lost by Gollum (a subterranean creature) and uses riddles and trickery to keep it. This book is a prequel to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Although it is not necessary to read this book to understand the trilogy, it is very enjoyable and gives the reader a background of how Bilbo acquired the ring and introduces Middle Earth and all of its wonderful characters and creatures. The story has many songs written into it that the dwarfs and other creatures sing through-out their journeys. Tolkien's style is very descriptive and consistently uniform. His imagination and ability to keep the action flowing will not disappoint you. I recommend this book for readers ages 12 to adult.

A fun adventure story for all ages,
By
This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
This book details the adventure 'There and Back Again' of Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo is a respectable Hobbit, who never does anything unexpected or adventurous until one day he has an adventure thrust upon him by the wizard Gandalf. Off he goes with a rabble of dwarves in search of a great treasure guarded by a terrible tragon. This wonderful tale is for anyone of any age who is old enough to sit still for a chapter at a time(I plan on this being a bedtime story book when my kids are old enough to enjoy this). You will grow to love Bilbo and his companions as they ramble through the wilderness, encounter dangers, hardships, and new friends. I was thoroughly entranced by this classic tale of adventure fantacy, and found myself coming up with tunes for the traveling songs and wishing I could be there within Middle Earth to have these adventures as well. This is also the prequel to 'The Lord of The Rings' which is also a wonderful classic of fantacy.

The Hobbit Is one of the best book I have ever read,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
The Hobbit is one of the best books I have ever read in of my 12-year life. Its about a little hobbit named Bilbo Bagens, 13 dwarfs, and a wizard. The book was so exiting the climax of the story was when they fought the dragon. I thought that the funniest part was when Bilbo meets a guy who talks like a snake. I really recommend this book to middle school and sixth graders because it's a pretty hard read. If you read the Hobbit and you liked it you should try the lord of the rings series

The Hobbit Book Review,
By Thomas S. (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
The Hobbit is full of on-the-edge-of-your-seat adventure. J.R.R. Tolken brings the characters to life in this non-stop action thriller. Once you start to read this book you will be hooked and will not be able to stop reading. J.R.R. Tolken describes everything so well that it feels like this fantasy world is real. The Hobbit takes place in a world of magic and evil. Bilbo Baggins is an old hobbit who wants to live the rest of his life in peace and harmony, but destiny has different plans. One day Bilbo was resting at his home when all of a sudden many dwarves came to Bilbos house, talking about a long and dangerous journey that ends with killing a dragon and taking its gold. At first Bilbo quickly rejects the idea. Then he hears exactly how much gold is involved and it was pretty hard for Bilbo to say no, so he decides to go along with the dwarves and the wizard. What Bilbo does not realize is that he going to be facing the most cruel and evil creatures in the world, like goblins, wolves, giant spiders and many more dangerous creatures. This is definitely one of the best books I have read in my life. Anybody can read it and everybody will like it. This book is J.R.R. Tolkens best piece of writing by far. This one of a kind tale is a book you will remember your whole life and should definitely be on our book shelf.

A One-of-a-Kind Story,
By Weston Bohall (Columbus, IN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
The first time I read The Hobbit I was eleven years old, and I was in the fifth grade.I Have read the book about five times since then. All of J.R.R Tolkien's books are excellant, one-of-a-kind, and very creative. Tolkien knows how to write an inspirational fantasy novel. For all fantasy lovers everywhere, The Hobbit, as well as all the books in the Lord of the Rings trilogy are a must have item for you. One of the things I love most about The Hobbit is that the book is suitable for all ages. Little children would delight in this magical story and the adventures of bilbo baggins, the wizard Gandalf, and the rest of thier dwarf companions. The story is suspenseful and exciting, and also contains the excitement of a large-scale medevil battle, which adds to the excitement of the wonderful ending. Besides being very well thought out, the book also is very descriptive. Tolkien gives the reader every oppertunity to use his or her imagination to the fullest. I personally recommend that one always read the novel by Tolkien before witnessing a film or cartoon based on his writings. No one can tell an enchanting story like Tolkien. The book is more complete than the cartoon or the film, and this gives readers a chance to better understand the characters and overall story details. It is better to experience the story from the vison of the creator rather than to view something used to imitate that which he created. Anyone who enjoys literature will regret not reading The Hobbit. It is a magnificent story even if you do not have quite the acute taste for fantasy. The Story contains some valuable life-lessons. The Hobbit is definitely a brilliant story that all readers must experience at least once in thier lifetime.

Confusion,

This review is from: J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (Playscript) (Paperback)
Some people seem a bit confused here...this is NOT the classic book THE HOBBIT, by J.J.R. Tolkien...it's a stage-adaptation of said work, and a paltry one at that.
