3.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly not bad for the price, December 20, 2007

This review is from: J. Reynolds Electric Guitar, JR5, Black
3/4 scale guitar (good for small hands)
22 frets
Solid body (not wood)
1 generic humbucker pickup
very light weight
Made in China

Bottom Line: Sound and feel are surprisingly good for a cheap guitar like this.

I bought this for very young kids to beat on, but found myself picking it up and playing it often (and I own $1000 and $3000 guitars). This one is small, light, sounds good, and is fun to play.

Out of the box, the setup was not good at all. Action way high, intonation off, etc.. Making the adjustments was easy though and after that it played real well.

The pickup initially had a hum that turned out to be a bad ground wire which was easily repaired and is perfectly silent now. The pickup is really the biggest surprise on the guitar. Good for clean and even better for crunchy, metal sounds.

Body is not wood, I guess it's some kind of laminate, but the string-through body design give it a surprising amount of sustain for a guitar that weighs practically nothing.

Was able to set the action pretty low. Not quite as low as I wanted, as I ran into a fret buzz around the 14th, but even so, it was very playable at the lowest level that did not cause problems.

Overall, compared to others I have played in this price range, this one is a sleeper. Just needs a bit of attention out of the box. Great deal as a starter for kids, or travel/practice guitar for anyone else.
