Amazing performance but probably not for everyone, December 10, 2008
This review is from: J.S. Bach: Brandenburgische Konzerte (Audio CD)
This is the most exciting recording of the Brandenburgs I have heard, but also one of the most meticulous.
The Akademie plays with amazing precision, executing the rhythms with flair and fluidity. The performance is without sentimentality but has incredible intensity and clarity. I've often felt that conductorless orchestras lack the cohesion and direction a leader can provide. This recording has proven me wrong. Rarely have I heard a larger ensemble play with such focus and drive.
I assume the first reviewer was not familiar with natural horns, one of the most difficult instruments to play well. This recording has some of the best natural horn playing I have heard in the Brandenburgs.
People who favor modern instrument performances are probably going to find this performance a little stringent and cold, even as period performances go. If you don't like Bach with fast tempos, this recording is not for you. But if you like incisive rhythms and amazing transparency, you might want to check this out.

Fabulous recording!, November 30, 2009
This review is from: J.S. Bach: Brandenburgische Konzerte (Audio CD)
I love this thrilling recording of the Brandenburg, but then I love original instruments, baroque music and fast tempi. NPR national classical music hosts Ted Libbey And Fred Child picked it as the best of the recorded Brandenburg Concertos. Here's the link that explains why:[...].
