Editorial Reviews

"An even more exciting disc - because it faces more serious challenges and meets them brilliantly - is J. S. Bach: New Transcriptions for Guitar". Hii makes it sound as if it had been composed for his own instrument - no small accomplishment." -- Joseph McLellan, Washington Post Review October 8, 1995

"With impeccable technique and outstanding interpretative gifts, Hii succeeds in making these pieces - originally for violin or organ - sound joyfully at home on nylon-string guitar. His passionate rubato and penetrating tone contribute to a thrilling performance that adds a new dimension to the Bach repertoire." -- James Rotondi, Guitar Player Review, November, 1995

Nobody plays the guitar like Philip Hii; he's a Heifetz of the classical guitar. Hii's Allegro is the best I've ever heard and the Toccata and Fugue is downright scary. This is must listening for classical guitar buffs who want to blow a few fuses." -- Diane Gordon, Acoustic Guitar Review, July/August 1994

5.0 out of 5 stars This is remarkable. Why isn't Phillip Hii famous? November 2, 2007
Format:Audio CD
This is more than just the "fast and clean" playing alluded to in another review. Hii shows a genuine feeling for the music of Bach, making the most of the more reflective moments as well as the (sometimes extended) passages requiring stunning technique. He combines all this with quite a bit of scholarly erudition--he has some very interesting ideas about the evolution of the final piece on the disk. There is nothing stuffy or academic about the playing, though. Hii hits all the emotions nicely as well. He deserves a wide audience anywhere fine guitar playing is appreciated. Too bad this remarkable performer hasn't yet received the recognition he deserves.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a long time guitar player March 14, 2005

and love classical, flamenco, jazz, rock, etc... I've noticed that many classical guitarists aren't well versed in playing extremely rapid scale passages like some jazz, rock, and flamenco players, most notably, Al di Meola, John McLaughlin, and, probably the fastest and most cleanest player, Paco De Lucia. Hii is the first classical guitarist that plays as fast, if not faster, than Paco, with a very clean executed style and without slurs. His technique is phenomenal.

The music on the disc is amazing, and the Tocatta and Fugue are unbelievable. This is a must have disc for upcoming virtuoso guitarist of any genre.

2.0 out of 5 stars Talented Player But... November 16, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Philip's technical ability is unquestionable. He's fast and I'm sure has the musicality to impress anyone, unfortunately the transcriptions that he chose on this CD are lacking in feel and the quality of the recording has much to be desired.
I do like his website and he has some great opinions in it.
