CD unreliable, February 13, 2010
This review is from: J.S. Bach: Selections from Anna Magdalena's Notebook (Book & CD) (Alfred Masterwork Edition) (Paperback)
1. The CD for this is unreliable. The pieces are well performed, but the guy is going by modern edits that are not the same as the ones printed in this book. Hence he accents and staccatos here and there where the book doesn't indicate such, and vice versa. Not to mention that occasionally he adds notes that are not in the text you have. I would still recommend you get the CD, though, since it only adds a couple of dollars to the price.
2. The back cover says, "A CD recording of the selections in Anna Magdalena's Notebook . . . is available separately (#16792)." This is not true, even if you go to the Alfred's website. You cannot buy the CD except with the book.
3. I had thought that Alfred's published a complete Anna Magdalena of which this was a sample. No. Only this "selections."
4. This book does not contain all of the famous pieces from Anna Magdalena's notebook, as you might think. I know of a couple of oft-anthologized minuets that aren't in here.
5. This book includes a couple hairy polonaises. This is good, especially for those who believe that everything from Anna Magdalena's Notebook is easy to play. Or catchy.
6. The thing is thin: only 45 pages of text.

excellent edition, December 18, 2008
This review is from: J.S. Bach: Selections from Anna Magdalena's Notebook (Book & CD) (Alfred Masterwork Edition) (Paperback)
This is an excellent edition of Bach's simple masterpieces. The decorations are clearly spelled out on separate staffs to avoid clutter. These are great pieces for the intermediate piano student.

Accessible for Intermediate Players, July 31, 2011
This review is from: J.S. Bach: Selections from Anna Magdalena's Notebook (Book & CD) (Alfred Masterwork Edition) (Paperback)
I really like this collection for intermediate students. The ornaments are clearly spelled out, along with a more detailed description of each in the preface. The suggested fingerings work reasonably well. As for the accuracy of the recordings, I think they work well enough to introduce new pianists to the music and style of J.S. Bach. The tracks reflect exactly what is printed in the sheet music so that students hear exactly what they are to play, and I think that is all that matters for this level of playing. The selected works in this collection include the most popular ones, like Minuette in G and Musette, which are the ones I usually start my students off with, and of course, the ornaments can be ignored for beginning-intermediate students. Overall, I really like this collection, and I highly recommend it.
