Format: Audio CD
This is a really terrific two-CD set of Bach's sonatas for violin and continuo. I have not always found these the easiest works to get into but Viktoria Mullova and Ottavio Dantone bring them alive wonderfully.

The music is, of course, wonderful but it's not the most accessible of Bach's work and some versions I've heard of these pieces have left me feeling excluded and uninspired. They are marvellously constructed examples of the baroque violin sonata with a huge variety of expressions of mood and emotion and fantastic harmonic invention, all of which Mullova and Dantone bring out beautifully. Both are musicians of the first rank, and although many would probably disagree with this, I think Viktoria Mullova is at her best in Bach. Both this and her superlative recording of the solo Violin Sonatas and Partitas Bach: 6 Sonatas & Partitas show her deep understanding of Bach's structures and the way in which they really express human emotions. Her minimal use of vibrato coupled with her impeccable judgement of rubato and ornamentation give these works real meaning, and Dantone matches her in every way. It's a beautifully judged and expressive performance.

I have two dearly loved recordings of these works by Rachel Podger Bach: Complete Sonatas for Violin and Obbligato Harpsichord /Podger · Pinnock and by Andrew Manze Bach - Violin Sonatas. This won't displace them in my affections, but it will sit alongside them and be enjoyed just as often. I love it and recommend it in the warmest terms.

I have never heard the Bach sonatas for violin and harpsichord played better. The performers are very much synched into the period performance style. The recording is so beautiful that if you have a very good set of headphones and close your eyes, you will think that you are in the same room with these two musician. I just does not get any better than this.

This recording is on a small, independent label. I would try to get it right away if you want the actual compact discs. Classical performances are frequently going to downloads when the first run of discs is sold out. The packaging is also very classy. It is in a digipack with notes. Very well produced!!! Do not let this one get away from you. I have noticed that harpichord recordings do not stay in the active catalog for very long. Try to get most of the harpsichord recordings of Kenneth Gifford, Blandine Verlet, Davitt Moroney, and others (even on the major labels). It is really an acquired taste for modern listeners. If you like this kind of music and want to own the physical disc, buy it now!

This has to be the best recording ever of the Bach sonatas. Viktoria Mullova is, as always, magnificent and she has superb backing by Ottavio Dantone. Highly recommended to all lovers of Bach music and, especially, of Viktoria Mullova.

It is delightful to hear Ms. Viktoria Mullova play Bach Sonatas for Violin and Piano again! Fresh and piqant! On early instrument with harpsichord.
Ms. Mullova, over the years, has lost naught of the cutting-edge technique I vividly remember from her first tour of the United States; she retains the sharpness of old with fresh detached eyes, involved yet aloof attitude. This is a grand find!
