This is simply a lovely CD., July 22, 2000
This review is from: J. Strauss: Waltzes & Polkas (Royal Edition, No. 85) (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful CD; I listen to it often. I particularly enjoy the waltzes. It took some work to decide between the various Strauss waltz recordings available but the time spent on research has turned out to be worth it.

The Radetzky March ..., May 3, 2010
This review is from: J. Strauss: Waltzes & Polkas (Royal Edition, No. 85) (Audio CD)
... is the last track on this CD of waltzes and marches from pre-WW1 "Kakania", the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary under the last of the Habsburg emperors. My interest in this music is historical and literary, but I can affirm that Lennie Bernstein conducts these bandshell classics with verve and delicacy.
It's the literary connections that I'm contemplating. The historical novel titled "The Radetzky March" is the best-known and most impressive work by the Jewish Austro-Hungarian writer Joseph Roth. The music must have had profound significance for Roth, as an icon of history, since the march is also mentioned in several other books of his. Likewise, it echoes in the streets of novels by Stefan Zweig, Bohumil Hrabal, and others. Chances are you've heard it, at least if you're over fifty, in a park somewhere. Here's your chance to confirm your memory ...
