J. Strauss, Jr. the way he was meant to be heard.,

This review is from: J. Strauss: Works for Male Chorus & Orchestra (Audio CD)
I first heard this recording over public radio. I was surprised to find how much fuller "An der schönen, bluen Donau" Walzer when the chorus is added or not subtracted from the music.
Of course everyone has a favorite and the first track even though the most popular is also my favorite. The other tracks make a good complement. There is not a klinker in the stack. As with books and movies, especially the listening of music, having knowledge of what you are listening to and the composer adds to the pleasure. This CD comes with a booklet telling the story ( in English and German) of the composer and information on each track. 1. An Der Schonen, Blauen Donau, Waltzer, Op. 314 By the beautiful blue Danube 2. 'S Gibt nur a Kairstadt 'S Gibt nur a Wien, Polka, Op. 291 There's only one Imperial City! There's only one Vienna 3. Wein, Weib Und Gesang, Waltzer, Op. 333 "Who loves not wine woman and song, Remains a fool his whole life long." 4. Hoch Osterreich! Marsch, Op. 371 5. Neu Wien , Waltzer, Op. 342 6. Sangerlust, Polka Francaise, Op. 328 7. Bei Uns Z' Haus, Waltzer, Op. 342 8. Aufs Korn, Marsch, Op. 478 9. Myrthenbluten, Waltzer, Op. 395 10. Burschenwanderung, Polka Francaise, Op. 389 11. Gross Wein, Waltzer, Op. 440

An enjoyable issue, familiar music or otherwise
I was quite surprised when I located this CD at a used bookstore; it is rather hard to find. But it is an agreeable disc, well recorded and well performed. If you enjoy Strauss' music and/or vocal music, then this disc should appeal to you. I myself enjoy male choruses; and J. Strauss II is one of my favorite composers. The purchase was logical. The recording, as I said, is good, one of Marco Polo's best. Johannes Wildner sets the tempo in Aufs Korn a bit fast, but that is a minor quibble. The CD begins with the slightly shorter vocal version of `The Blue Danube'. The disc continues, alternating Waltz/Polka all the way through. Also of note is the vocal version of `Wine, Women and Song'. Some of these pieces were written for male chorus without first being performed in a purely orchestral form. No exact translations are included, but the otherwise detailed notes mention the main phrase of each song. A pity this fine disc is not available from Amazon; you'll have to dig for it if you want it. I am not sure if any similar album exists. EDIT: Almost three years after the writing of this review, this CD has become available on Amazon again! Snatch it up while you can, you Strauss fans. - 11/17/09
