A Piece of History, March 29, 2006
This review is from: J.A.T.P. In Tokyo - Live at the Nichigeki Theatre 1953 (Audio CD)
I recently acquired the vinyl album box set of this concert and it is a beautiful set. It is a 3 LP set. This CD is only part of the second and third LP in the set. The first LP is the Jazz At The Philharmonic All Stars. The second LP is the Oscar Peterson Trio and the Gene Krupa Trio. The third LP is Ella Fitzgerald. It's too bad they didn't release the entire set on a 2 CD set. I can't comment on the concert itself, since I'm just discovering it myself. From what I've heard so far, it is a remarkably clean recording. The liner notes, which are extensive, indicate that this was a very well received concert of some historical significance. It was one of the first American Jazz tours to Japan after World War II.

It's a treasure, July 17, 2010

This is the one I was looking for many years. I accidentally found it more than 10 years ago and as soon as I listened, I loved it. You would listen to incredibly great artists when they were young and climbing to the success. Thanks to Norman Grantz who made this recording possible. Benny Carter, Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Brown and many others, who played so enthusiastcically in Tokyo's no longer existing Nichigeki Theatre. This is the one every Jazz fan has to have like a Bible.
