This is apparently the same device as the slightly-more-expensive Loftek HDfuryproTwo Input HDMI to RGB Component YPbPr / VGA 2x1 Switch Converter Support 5.1CH Surround Sound, with different branding. I believe both devices supersede the previous ViewHD device, which also had good reviews. I'm sure it is no accident that you should confuse this with the higher-end and much more expensive HD Fury products, but as far as I can tell, there is no affiliation. At least the J-Tech device arrived with no HD Fury branding, but otherwise is similar to the pictures. I researched the reviews, and these are the best devices in this price range, as they overcome some of the problems that other devices have. It may not work for everyone, depending on your TV, but it works for most. I am using it successfully with the Roku 2 XD and an older Sony TV with a broken HDMI port (an all-too-common problem).

HD legal teams are evidently hard at work to prevent analog HD, and especially HDMI/HDCP conversion devices like this one. This is in spite of the fact that the HD industry was built on the backs of early adopters that paid big bucks for HDTV's with component video inputs. If you have an older TV or need a converter, you should go ahead and grab one before they disappear.

Some years ago, we purchased an HDTV and unwittingly bought one of the last models that came with component but without HDMI. Although we have newer TVs in the house we wanted to be able to enjoy AppleTV and digital cable TV on this set.

This was the second converter we purchased - at first we purchased a different, cheaper model with a single HDMI input from Etekcity which was defective. From reviews of that and similar models, those seem to suffer from high defect rates so we opted for this model which is more expensive and, hopefully would be a higher quality device.

This converter has worked fine for us. Our TV only supports 720 natively, so we are not using 1080. In either case, it was simple plug and play with both Apple TVs and the digital cable - all devices worked fine without any additional configurations.

I bought this product by J-Tech for this setup: AppleTV(3rd gen, HDMI out only) --> J-Tech --> Component input of TV. The following TVs that I own play video and audio correctly in this setup: Fujitsu P42 Plasma, TCL LE32 LED. It also works with other digital sources (DVD etc) and with VGA input to the TV. Unfortunately my main TV, a Sharp LC-46SE94U (LCD) shows no picture whatever and plays no audio when connected as above.

Mfr states that product does not work with TVs whose refresh rate is 120 Hz (like the Sharp): only with 60 Hz refresh rate. That could be pretty limiting today. And it should be stated on the product description.

Does not pass 5.1 to audio out.
I bought this to help build my own DVR setup.
Equipment: Panasonic Blu-Ray player with Netflix & Amazon streaming. J-Tech HDMI to Component converter. AverMedia Pro. Sanyo LCD with component input. External HD connected to the AverMedia Pro.
Streaming Netflix & Amazon through the J-Tech to the Avermedia to record is not a problem when the audio is 2.0 or stereo. BUT if the streaming video is in 5.1 DTS or Dolby, there is NO SOUND.
Luckily, the Panasonic DID output sound on the stereo out while also puting HDMI out. So, my solution was to take the stereo out of the panasonic straight to the AverMedia Pro (bypassing the J-Tech).
Reason for three stars. There IS a switch on the J-Tech pro that says 5.1ch / 2ch but no matter what position that switch was in, no audio if the audio coming in was 5.1 and always had sound if the incoming audio was 2ch. So, the switch is either not working or does something other than what I believed it should.

I ordered this to use with a 40" Sony LCD 120Hz TV that had the HDMI inputs go bad. While it easy to hook up and worked, the TV displayed a band of skewed image across a couple of inches of the top of the screen. I tried it on another TV that was a 60Hz refresh and the unit worked flawlessly. Apparently the problem was syncing with the higher refresh rate of the Sony. J-Tech support has been prompt and helpful, and I reluctantly returned the converter today.

A few helpful hints that I found in using the converter. There are two audio outputs, one a 1/8" stereo jack (cable not included) for analog audio, and the other an optical digital output. You will need to hook both up to use a home theater receiver as the audio feed will depend on the source material. The same holds true for the HDMI input to the TV.

My TV was not set up to use Dolby audio so when I went to watch a movie on Netflix fed from my Blu-Ray player, I initially got no sound. It was easily remedied by going into the audio setting on the Netflix movie and selecting stereo sound rather than Dolby. It also would work with Dolby sound by setting up the TV to use Dolby rather than PCM audio (in the TV sound settings menu).

You also need to set the switch on the converter to the proper type of audio to match the source and use the corresponding output/input when using a home theater receiver. I hope this helps clear up any reviews about the sound not working, it works well and just needs to be set up properly.

I also tried the converter to extract digital audio from a tablet HDMI output to feed into a stereo receiver. Again it worked well and was much cleaner than hooking up from the headphone output.
