Editorial Reviews

Product Description

With his grand scale and richly colored canvases and studies, John William Waterhouse (1849-1917) was one of the most influential painters of the 19th century. In this brilliantly illustrated  survey, edited by a leading Waterhouse scholar, the painter's seductive vision of femininity is captured in sumptuous reproductions and illuminated by an engaging and informative text.

Published to accompany an important exhibition of the artist's work, the book explores Waterhouse's creative responses to such contemporary concerns as medievalism, the classical tradition, and spiritualism. A comprehensive examination of his life and work, including his well-known painting The Lady of Shallott, this volume explores also the artist's connection to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and his engagement with French art of the period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Waterhouse Review, July 15, 2009
Length:: 0:20 Mins

I've just bought this hardcover book by Peter Trippi and I am impressed with the overall size of each color plates and drawings contained within this book. The color plates could be a little bigger to fit each page, but I guess that's just asking for too much for how many wonderful paintings and drawings are in this book already. Also the cover shown here on Amazon is not the actual cover, it's a cover of the painting "The Lady of Shalott".

4.0 out of 5 stars good, not great, August 25, 2009

I have seen most of the works here before aside from the drawings. In my opinion, the quality of the prints is better in Trippi's phaidon book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous volume. Must have for Waterhouse/late Victorian fans, August 19, 2009

This is an exhibition catalog, focusing specifically on the works in the exhibition. This might sound limiting, but the exhibition had a superb display, and this book catalogues all of the works in detail. A great introduction to Waterhouse, and a must-have for all fans of Waterhouse and similar artists such as Alma-Tadema. The work is large, and makes an excellent "coffee table" work. I have all other works on Waterhouse in print, and if I had to retain just one, it would definitely be this book.
