Amazon.com Product Description -- Posted May 22, 2008 Never scramble to write down a new song title or the name of an artist you hear on the radio. A simple button press places the song information on your iPod. The JBL On Time 400IHD loudspeaker dock is a complete digital life system. It features the digital clarity of HD AM and FM, multicasting capability, an iPod dock and a clock with a dual alarm.

A complete digital life system, featuring the digital clarity of HD AM and FM, multicasting capability, an iPod dock and a clock with a dual alarm.

Combines many proprietary technologies for the highest quality sound, offering astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction.

Compatible with docking versions of the iPod, including the iPod touch, iPod nano 3G, and iPod classic 6G.

Which Dock Is for You?
JBL's been in the iPod dock business for awhile, so it's no surprise that the company has crafted enough models to keep up with an ever-increasing army of iPod owners. Which one is right for you? Well, that depends what kind of pod person you are:

For the Power Hungry
For those who seek more volume, the On Stage 400ID should be your first stop. At 2x15 Watts, it's the loudest and largest of the bunch, and features an Atlas woofer for added bass. But size isn't everything--the On Stage Micro boasts the same wattage rating without the woofer.

For the Weekend Warriors
Those who need a dock that they can take anywhere should investigate docks that can be powered by batteries. The On Stage Micro runs on four AAAs, whereas the On Stage IIIP and On Stage III run on six. Take your music to the beach, on camping trips--wherever you can't bear to be without it.

For the iPhone Techies
The iPhone owner--if you can stand to put the thing down--has a couple choices. The On Stage IIIP provides a smaller and more portable option, or the On Stage 200ID gives a bit more power. These two docks support all docking iPod models as well.

For the Featurephiles or Heavy Sleepers
Some of us just aren't content with basic functionality; we need more buttons, more lights. Others just need a little nudge to wake up in the morning. If this is you, then the On Time 200ID and 400IHD are for you. Both feature an alarm clock and AM/FM radio, with the ability to wake up to your favorite song stored on your iPod (and then reject it with the snooze button). Of course, for the masochists, a classic buzzer is also available. The On Time 400IHD adds a dual alarm clock and HD radio to the mix, for a crystal-clear signal and a variety of text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.) scrolled across your screen.

Something for Everyone
All of these models feature a remote control for full iPod navigation, Evercharge topology to charge iPod even when not connected to a PC or the system is turned off, a mini-jack for auxiliary devices, and the sleek design and solid performance you'd expect from JBL.

HD Radio Technology
The JBL On Time 400IHD loudspeaker dock features FM multicasting--the ability to broadcast multiple program streams over a single FM frequency (e.g., 97.7-1, 97.7-2). With its static-free, crystal clear reception, FM can sound as sensational as CDs, and AM sounds as rich as analog FM stereo. A variety of data, including text-based information (artist name, song title, weather alerts, school closings, etc.), is scrolled across your display. Digital broadcasts are at the same frequencies as analog broadcasts so that listeners do not need to learn new station numbers, and today's stations remain at their current place on the dial. You get local content and the excellence of HD Radio with no subscription fees.

One-Button "Wish List"
Even if your iPod is not docked, the JBL On Time 400IHD system will store song information; the next time the iPod is docked, download the stored wish list to your iPod. Then, the next time you connect your iPod to iTunes, it will display your wish list and allow you to easily select the songs.

iPod Docking and Charging
In addition to your wish list storage, enjoy the convenience of controlling your music and browsing videos using the remote. The system also charges your dockable iPod.

Dual Alarm Clock
The dual independent alarms are great for that school or work schedule. Wake up to your choice of any song on your iPod, an HD or analog radio station, your auxiliary input, or the good old buzzer. The adjustable snooze timer and adjustable sleep timer are additional features. The clock can be supported by 3 AAA backup batteries, so that even with the power out, the alarm functions operate.

Compatibility
The JBL On Time 400IHD system is compatible with most docking versions of the iPod. A stereo mini jack connection also allows you to enjoy high-quality audio from a variety of other devices, such as MP3 and CD players, desktop computers (all platforms), satellite radio, and laptops.

Easy-to-Use Music and Navigation Controls
Just a touch of the music controls increases or decreases the volume. Using the navigation controls, browse songs, playlists and photos, change tracks and settings, place a song on your wish list, and more. The JBL On Time 400IHD system gives you complete control of your iPod, as if it were in your hand.

Digital Power and DSP
The JBL On Time 400IHD system features a powerfully tuned digital audio path. The clean and compact digital amplification, coupled with DSP (digital signal processing) equalization, efficiently presents the transducers with a clean, powerful soundstage.

Advanced Technology
The JBL On Time 400IHD loudspeaker dock combines many proprietary technologies to provide the highest quality sound. The system offers astonishing bass and clear sound from any direction.

  • Phoenix transducers--Two Phoenix drivers reproduce accurate high frequencies, clear midrange sound and powerful bass.
  • Slipstream port design--The JBL On Time 400IHD port minimizes distortion, while optimizing high-output bass.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not good for bedroom, January 26, 2009

This review is from: JBL On Time 400IHD High-Performance Speaker Dock with HD Digital Radio for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I had bought this for my bedroom, but there are a couple things I don't like about it there. First, the screen is very bright and there is no way to turn it off or really dim it. Second, the lowest volume settings is still a bit loud when falling asleep. It is a digital control, so you cannot manually tweak it.

Otherwise, for a different room it would be a great product, and good sound, and is pretty easy to use.

1.0 out of 5 stars Watch out! Does not operate well with the ipod touch 2g...and has other issues., February 18, 2009

Like others, I was so excited to receive the speaker system until I plugged it in. I read the reviews and the description on Amazon. It specifies that it is compatible with the ipod touch 2nd g...well, it's not. It does not charge the ipod touch 2nd g and has a hard time trying to play the music from it...it doesn't always register the info and the remote doesn't operate the functions from the ipod. I really don't think it was made for the ipod touch 2nd generation...so be careful. The adapters only specify the ipod touch...I'm assuming only works with the 1st generation.
I was extremely disappointed since that was one of the main reasons I made the purchase last week from the goldbox offer of the day. The remote is worthless...it works when it wants to and sometimes plays other functions not commanded. It doesn't seem to be a battery issue.

I live in the center of a major city and have access to HD radio channels (20 stations) but this player had so much trouble locating the stations and occasionally skipped to other channels when it incurred reception problems without my command. I had both antennas (am/fm) connected into the system so it should have worked. I love the fact that it has so many options but they need to rethink about its functionality...necessary changes. There is no mute button on the remote or interface...bummer. The blue backlight doesn't have an off feature and the font is less than attractive. The manufacture needs to seriously work on improving their system...yikes!

The speakers were the only substantial thing to the system. It has excellent sound quality when you can get the radio to hold a channel...very, very disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound doesn't outweigh interface and sync problems, February 9, 2009
This review is from: JBL On Time 400IHD High-Performance Speaker Dock with HD Digital Radio for iPod (Black) (Electronics)
I was very excited to get the JBL 400iHD for Xmas, especially after seeing such great reviews of it. However, I have since had my enthusiasm brought back to earth after experiencing two major problems with the unit.

The minor problem is that once you have created a new alarm time, it is impossible to remove it. So if you, like I did, made 5 or 6 new alarm times when you first started playing around with the unit, you are stuck scrolling through them forever. Now, of course you can turn off all the unnecessary ones, but the lack of ability to delete a pre-set alarm time seems like a real oversight on behalf of the designers.

Second, I have been unable to use the remote to move through the menus or otherwise control my IPod. I have a 120 GB IPod Classic with the latest updated drivers(version 1.1.2), and while the radio will play whatever music is coming out of the IPod, I can't use the remote to pause/play, ff, or move through the IPod's menus. (The remote does work for all other aspects of the radio, volume, etc.) What a disappointment!

Past these two huge flaws, it really is a sleek little unit that sounds great.
