The first thing to know is JBL is by Harman Kardon so whilst you might not recognize the JBL name, most people will have certainly heard of Harman who are well known for home audio.

I think most reviewers will agree that they are at first bowled over by the size of this sub-woofer. As opposed to most sub-woofers which have a speaker at the front, JBL have elected to design this with the speaker at the bottom of the cabinet (speaker facing down) and you have a chamber at the front. Most audiophiles will tell you that the cabinet is often as important as the speaker. Manufacturers themselves want a 'dead' sound from the speaker cabinet so it doesn't interact with the speaker. This one is made of solid wood and the chamber helps bring out the sound nicely so you are assured of all around quality.

Another noticeable point about this sub-woofer is the heat-sink on the back which cools the amplifier inside, which in turn drives the speaker. This is neatly placed on the back (I am sure for necessity) but both the physical size of the sub-woofer and the heat-sink make this unit instantly stand out.

The only controls on this unit are the phase +/-, the crossover adjust and the level. The phase is meant to be set at what sounds most natural but set at the + if you can't tell the difference. The crossover adjust is set at the position which sounds best. This is dependent on your main speakers and whether they are capable of producing low frequency sounds. If they can then set the crossover to a lower frequency setting so the sub-woofer can concentrate on the ultra-deep sounds. The level control is best set to a level in relative to your front speakers. I found the best thing to do was run the test sound from my amplifier and then set the controls.

I purchased this subwoofer to replace an old subwoofer from a HTIB (Home Theater In a Box) system. I chose this particular subwoofer first because of the brand and second because of the price. I have used JBL products for years (Home, Car, and Professional) and have always been very pleased with their performance. This one is no different.

When it arrived, I was quite surprised at it's size. It is much bigger than I expected for a single 10" subwoofer but still comfortably fits in next to my entertainment center.

As for the sound, I would consider this subwoofer very good but not great. It has much better low end extension than your typical HTIB subwoofer but it's not going to shake the ground. I have never been fond of 10" low frequency drivers and this one isn't going to change my view of them. For some reason, I always find 10" drivers to be more "muddy" sounding than a 12" or even an 8" driver. However, when the next step up (12") costs three times what this one does, I can certainly make an exception. That said, this subwoofer does sound good and has no trouble filling my entire living room with good solid bass.

The features on this subwoofer are also very good. It has speaker level and line level stereo inputs as well as a separate line level LFE input for feeding from a Home Theater receiver. One thing to note, the manual says that the LFE input will bypass the crossover setting. This is actually preferable since the crossover function should be handled by your receiver so that the sub picks up where the main speakers drop off and there is no or very little frequency overlap.

One thing to be cautious of is the power that this thing has. 100w RMS/225w Peak may not sound like much but it is more than enough to fill your average living room/den or to upset your neighbors if you live in an apartment.

All in all, this is an excellent choice for the price and I am very pleased with it.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have what might be politely described as a primitive A/V system...two decent bookshelf speakers tied to an old NAD amplifier hooked to the line outputs on my Comcast DVR box. It's basically equivalent to a high fidelity version of the flat panel TV's built-in speakers.

Not surprisingly, hooking in this subwoofer has made an amazing difference in the quality of the sound. I need to keep it turned almost all the way down to avoid overwhelming the rest of the system, but the difference is like night and day. There's a richness to the sound that simply wasn't present before.

Is it equivalent to a $500-$1500 Velodyne? Nope. Not even close. It doesn't have the same tightness that you'll find in a high-end subwoofer. But it's intended to fit into the mainstream market, not the audiophile segment. And for most people, this unit is pretty darn good.

It should be noted that this is a down-firing speaker with the front-mounted port. The instructions tell you to keep at least 6" between the port and a facing wall, but that shouldn't be too difficult in normal installations...the connections and controls are on the side opposite the port and you'll normally keep those facing the wall.

Also, don't overlook the size of this box. Subwoofers can't be too small; they have to move too much air at low frequencies. At almost 15 x 15 x 20 inches, the JBL Balboa SUB 10 is good sized. A certain spouse wasn't overjoyed when this showed up. She likes it better now that she's heard it in action. :>)
