  • Utilize UHF drivers cable of 40Hz for excellent highs.
  • A JBL computer-optimized bass-reflex port provides deeper bass and less turbulence.
  • These speakers are designed to look good anywhere with a style that equals their substance.

Key Features

25 – 280 watts suggested amplifier power range

JBL engineers designed each ES30 loudspeaker to produce precise, exceptional sound from a receiver or amplifier capable of delivering up to 280 watts of power.

Proprietary 6" PolyPlas transducers

The ES30’s stiff, lightweight PolyPlas driver material, with a rubber surround, reproduces vocals with incredible accuracy, gives great bass response, creates a seamless surround field and minimizes distortion, even at high volumes. Together, the driver and surround give you an unmatched audio experience.

Dual 3/4" tweeters

The ES30’s high-frequency and ultrahigh-frequency tweeters deliver accurate, undistorted high-frequency response, even when the volume is way up. The end result is a full, clear, tight reproduction of high and ultrahigh frequencies.

The ES30’s proprietary EOS waveguide technology delivers precise imaging throughout your listening environment

Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguides

The ES30’s proprietary EOS waveguide technology delivers precise imaging throughout your listening environment. You get ideally balanced music, crisp dialogue and smooth audio distribution. Every seat will be the best seat in your home theater.

Three-way speaker configuration

Three-way speaker design and quality cones make for tighter, more precise bass and midrange reproduction. As a result, the ES30 offers a full range of frequencies and lifelike imaging.

Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) design

The ideal path from input to components to transducers is a straight line. The ES30 takes that path. Its Straight-Line Signal Path™ (SSP) technology preserves the clarity, detail and dynamics of your favorite audio content.

Computer-optimized, bass reflex port

The ES30’s computer-optimized, bass-reflex port extends deep bass response. It also eliminates the unwanted turbulence that’s usually associated with powerful speakers.

Accurate frequency response

The ES30 doesn’t over-emphasize or under-emphasize any sounds. With a frequency response of 50Hz – 40kHz, the speaker reproduces a true, full sound range from deep bass tones to ultrahigh frequencies.

Bi-wiring capabilities

The ES30’s internal dividing network enables bi-wiring capabilities that offer you more flexibility in amplifier selection - and serious sonic advantages in audio response.

Magnetically shielded

The ES30 produces great, sit-anywhere sound in your room. And you can also put it anywhere, because it’s magnetically shielded for safe placement near your TV or display.

This review is for the cherry color version of this speaker, but they are identical to these ES30BK's, except for the color.

I just received 2 pairs of JBL ES30CH speakers and the ES25CCH center channel speaker. (The black ones are ES30BK and ES25CBK.) I bought these to replace a set of JBL LX300's that I have had for 20 years. (The old ones will still be in use on another system.) JBL's quality and value for the dollar is well known, so I will try to give you information to help you decide if these speakers are for you.

They are large for bookshelf speakers and they are wider in front than in back. They measure 15 1/4" high, 13 1/4" from front to back, and 9" wide in the front, tapering to 6" wide in the back (they are wedge-shaped). The wedge-shape may seem strange at first, but they look really nice in my living room, and look great positioned straight on or at an angle. I have 2 pair - the front set is positioned straight-on facing the sofa, and the back pair is set at a 30-degree angle on each side of the sofa. They look great, especially the cherry wood color. I do have the ES20's in black, and they also look great.

I have mine set on speaker stands, but if you have room you can place them on a shelf or on large end tables. They are heavy - about 20 pounds each, so plan accordingly. If you use speaker stands, be sure they are 15" tall or shorter, as taller ones would put your speakers in danger of toppling over. All 4 of mine are on 15" speaker stands, and they are actually quite stable standing right beside the TV stand (front pair) and end tables (rear pair).

As for performance - they are great! I had considered full tower speakers, but these put out such full sound that towers are not needed.

I can't believe people use these as surround speakers. I use them as bookshelfs for my stereo and they blast crisp, clear sound and very high volumes for their size. One thing to note is that they sound a bit bright right out of the box but that dissapeared after a few weeks of use.

We installed this ES30 bookshelfs as Main LR front speakers and sounds very detailed highs with powerful bass.
I decided to use as Rears (with Omnimount Wall) for the home theater because we use ES80 as mains.

First I want to mention, for those who don't know, that JBL has two lines of speakers. They have a professional line such as the "L" series and a consumer line such as the "ES" series. If you've heard great things about JBL speakers it's probably due to their pro series speakers.

PROS:

- They look great, I really thought the finish was beautiful and decently constructed.
- The size. This can be either a pro or a con depending on your preference. I happen to like big and heavy speakers, but if you prefer smaller bookshelf speakers then you might consider something else.
- The bass. The bass sounded pretty amazing and you could probably get away with not having a sub.

CONS:

- The mids. Honestly, they are terrible. They sound very muddled (I've heard this from other reviewers) and the vocals just sound awful. Even my wife, who knows little to nothing about music, instantly commented that the vocals sounded like they were recorded with a pillow wrapped around the microphone.

CONCLUSION:

I've listed 3 pros and only one con, but please consider how important the mids will be to you. I really, really wanted these speakers to work. I thought that if I broke them in more the sound would improve. I kept them for several weeks, fine tuned the EQ, raised the treble, lowered the bass, switched out different receivers (currently using Denon X1000). Not much improvement at all.

If you plan on having a 2.1 stereo system then I can NOT recommend these speakers. If you plan on having a 5.1 or 7.1 system then it may work provided that the center speakers make up for the lack in midrange.

I only use them for music and I'm very pleased. I The bass output is pretty ridiculous for such (relatively) small and affordable speakers (got mine after the price drop - $200). I've only used them with an mp3 player via headphone ->rca connection thus far. Lacking some of the clarity but I'm pretty sure it's on my setup and not the speakers. I definitely recommend them.

Note: there are four terminals on each speaker for dual amp receivers (according to manual). Never saw this and didn't notice it in the description/specs but it's probably an extra selling-point for some. Requires twice the speaker wire though... at least according to the diagram they provide.

This speaker has great clarity. It have extremely clear high range. I was very surprised with the bass quality given it only have a 6" speaker. It lacks mid-range sound.

The speakers may be a bit large for a bookcase speaker. But for its size it has rich true bass response and clear midrange and treble. The imaging is excellent with a good amp or receiver. I was very impressed with the sound quality for the price. It is an excellent bargain in my opinion.
