Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're looking to save space in a cramped living room or you just like the sleek style of in-wall speakers, the JBL HTI6 setup makes a great fit. Each speaker's mounting cutout measures 7.12 by 9.69 inches (W x H)--about the size of many family photo picture frames. Listeners are advised to install the speakers within the wall at ear level, where the 6.5-inch polymer-coated aluminum cone woofer and 1-inch pure-titanium dome tweeter combine to produce rich, powerful bass and crisp high tones. To further the audio flexibility, JBL outfitted the tweeters with unique swivel mounts. Listeners can adjust the tweeters to the preferred angle depending on where they're sitting and which angle produces the best overall sound. The units are ideal for use as main speakers in a space-challenged living room, as secondary speakers in an adjacent room (when connected to the main receiver), or even as home theater surround speakers (rear left/right) for watching movies or listening to five-channel audio sources. The in-wall location not only preserves space, but it also adds a high-tech touch to your room décor.

The speakers are relatively easy to install using a Philips screwdriver, utility knife, tape measure, and carpenter's level. However, it's difficult to move or reposition them once the cutouts are made, so users are advised to take their time when determining the ideal listening location. JBL recommends installing the speakers at approximately the same height as the listener's ears for best results. The speaker set also includes integrated dog-ear brackets for retrofit applications and a template/paint shield that can be used to make the initial cutout or protect the speakers when applying a new paint color to the frame (the speakers come in white).

The speaker terminals accommodate up to 16-gauge speaker cable (not included), which JBL recommends for distances below 20 feet. The company advises using 12-gauge wires for speakers located between 20 and 30 feet from the receiver, and 10-gauge cable for distances above 30 feet.

It's the audio that impresses most, however. The speakers' generous power capacity ensures rich, powerful sound with a frequency response of 38 Hz to 20 kHz. Whether your priority is to spread music throughout the house or make your home theater speakers disappear from sight, JBL's HTI6 speakers get the job done.

What's in the Box
Two HTI6 speakers with grilles, template/paint shield, warranty card, user's manual.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than adequate, March 9, 2009

This review is from: JBL HTI6 2-Way 6.5-Inch In-Wall Speakers, Pair (White) (Electronics)
I've got two pairs of these speakers installed in my house. One pair in my home office, and one pair as part of a fair to middlin' home entertainment system.

In the entertainment center, they're the front pair of speakers. They're powered by a yamaha receiver and coupled with a yamaha sub and jbl center channel, and polk rear speakers. Everything is pretty mid-range - I'd say the entire setup (front, rear, sub, center, receiver) was between $1200 and $1300. This all sits around my 50" panasonic plasma (which I love).

In the home office, they're the only speakers in the room - roughly 15 x 20. They're driven by the same receiver that's part of the entertainment center.

All in all, I'm very happy with them in both settings. I'm not an audiophile by any stretch, but every time I've got the system going, I'm just blown away by what I've been missing. I really never have the chance to turn it all the way up to 11, but sports, music, movies, whatever I'm listening to, it is all is just really, really nice crisp, clear, full sound.

Finally, installation was as simple as I could imagine it. I just sketched the outline onto my wall, used a dremel to cut out the shape, and plopped them right in. Mucking with drywall is messy, so a helper holding a vacuum cleaner up close is highly recommended. But, I couldn't imagine how they could have made it easier. I didn't, nor do I plan on, painting the grills. They look fine in my off white walls as is.

As an aside, I bought some low end JBL 2600s way back in the day - probably 1990 or 1991, and they're still going strong and sounding good in another part of the house. So, I've got past experience with their low/mid range stuff lasting.

These JBL speakers are fine if you're looking for stereo sound coming out of your TV/entertainment system. The performance will fall short if you're expecting BOSE quality sound. The nice thing about these JBLs is that they are constructed of good quality materials which should last a good time. The directional tweeters are a nice touch so you can point them to a particular spot in the room. They also provide a decent bass so you don't really need a subwoofer.
