As a very satisfied owner of an almost antique JBL bookshelf speaker system and a mp3 docking station I can attest to the company's overall craftsmanship. I've even owned an outdoor setup circa 1990s, that held its own until a tree limb took it out of business. The company has had a good run with products that I've purchased. So when I picked up this bluetooth speaker I knew what kind of quality this gear brings to the table. I bought several of these as Christmas gifts in different colors. Everyone loves them.

Out of the box this speaker is impressive. I like the overall feel and balance. Measuring in at about 3"W x almost 2"H, it weighs in at a little over 4 ounces. The speaker kit is packed with a 36" micro USB charging cable, storage pouch, warranty card, and instructions. Even though its doesn't take a degree in rocket science to start this puppy up, the company loses points for its ho hum instructions. The body is outfitted with a handle for mounting a lanyard or carabiner. I opted to add a nylon lanyard. I picked up a protective storage case and dumped the storage pouch.

After a quick two hour charge, I first connected this puppy to my mp3 player. No problems. Afterwards I tried this speaker out with my Galaxy 3. Again, no problems. The power button is located on the side. With 3 watts of power, this model is not going to be accused of shaking the paint off the walls. No matter what I had connected, this model delivered my tunes with clear, crisp highs and a nice rich bass. Unlike other gear that I've used in the past, I got zero distortion.

As advertised, I got almost a full five hours before it was time to recharge. When fully juiced a bright blue light illuminates at the 12 o'clock position on the front of the unit. It grows paler after a few hours of use.

I wasn't sure which speaker was the best for me. I have great stereo speakers at home, so my intended use was just to have something portable, small, convenient. I am by no means an "audiophile," but I cringe when I hear bad sounding music.

I first compared JBL Micro Wireless vs. HDMX XT (smaller category), then Photive Cyren v. Amazon Basics Bluetooth Speaker (larger category).

In comparing, I used various songs from various genres: country, reggae, hip-hop, edm.
In comparing, I used only bluetooth connections from both my iphone and my laptop. (I did not test with aux cable connections b/c I never intend on using the speakers in that fashion).

JBL v. HDMX -
- HDMX has the capability of being much louder than the JBL, but it distorted at high volume. Even at a lower volume where it didn’t distort, it kind of sounded like the music was playing through a tunnel.
- JBL was much more crisp, even at max volume (little or no distortion). However, JBL max volume was not as loud as HDMX max volume.
- Bass given more emphasis on HDMX, but JBL was much more smooth and balanced. Honestly though, if you are looking for bass, neither the HDMX nor the JBL deliver a pounding bass.
Conclusion: If you want loud, maybe for party, and don’t mind distortion HDMX wins. If you want loud enough, and crisp JBL wins hands down. Winner JBL

Cyren v. Amazon
- I will not even go into detail here. Amazon wins, plain and simple. Louder, fuller, better bass. I am incredibly impressed with Amazon's speaker here.
- Note again here that neither Cyren nor Amazon have pounding bass either.

JBL v. Amazon
- Question here is purely size. Amazon is over twice the size of JBL.

I've lost count of how many of these speakers I've purchased. After buying a pair for the house, I bought several more to give as gifts. Really great sound.

This little speaker really delivers. My husband was doubtful because is is small and cute...until he paired it with his phone. There is NO hissing or humming when it is idle and shuffling between songs, and is has a lovely and crisp sound. The bass is surprisingly good and rich and we are both totally impressed. You can also charge it with you iPhone plug or any USB style plug, so it can charge in a wall outlet with such an adapter, in a car outlet, or via the computer. Great little speaker. Now I want one.

These are great quality speakers and small enough to take with you anywhere. They are easy to sync (though it doesn't tell you how to turn it on and off since the instructions are a simple sheet using caveman sign language). You have to figure it out on your own.

I have the Jambox, mini Jambox, soundlink, and big jambox. This is my favorite. It's extremely portable and sounds great. There is no other speaker (for the price) that will beat this. And if you have 2 of them, you can daisy chain them together to make them even louder. I posted a hands on review here: [...]

Good quality sound and easy to use, but it doesn't get nearly loud enough. I use this with my ipad to watch shows while cooking and even when I have it turned all the way up it's still barely loud enough when I have my stove fan on. My son uses it to listen to music while shooting hoops and it doesn't get loud enough for that either. I guess we have to get a more expensive Bose system, but I was trying to avoid that!
