Product Description

From the Manufacturer

The Northridge E Series E80 dual 6-inch floorstanding loudspeaker delivers superb audio, whether used for critical listening in a stereo system, or when combined with a Northridge E center channel, bookshelf surrounds and a subwoofer to create a home theater system.

The E80 performs like a pro, with technology developed by JBL’s Professional division. Equipped with JBL's tried-and-true titanium-laminate tweeters and PolyPlas drivers, the speaker reproduces high notes with extreme clarity. The lows and mids, efficiently boosted by dual 6-inch woofers and assisted by the FreeFlow flared port, are loud and clear, without unwanted distortion or boominess. The Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS) waveguide ensures that every seat is the best in the house for sweet music and intelligible dialogue, or for just rocking out. Since the transducers were purpose-designed to work together harmoniously, JBL's simple Straight-Line Signal Path (SSP) crossover network divides the signal with minimal processing (and minimal opportunity to degrade the signal). Dual sets of sturdy gold-plated, 5-way binding posts enable bi-amping or bi-wiring. With the high, midrange and low frequencies isolated, the E80's four transducers can reproduce their frequency ranges more efficiently and with greater accuracy. The computer-designed, lock-mitred cabinet virtually eliminates distortion, and its slim European profile won’t overpower your room.

The E80 is available with an attractive Black Ash, Beech or Cherry finish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compared with Klipsch/Polk in store, liked these best, November 23, 2004
By
This review is from: JBL Northridge E80 3-Way Dual 6-Inch Floorstanding Speaker, Single (Black Ash) (Electronics)
At our local BB store, we could compare the JBL speakers hooked up to the identical receiver model (older yamaha) and the same content source. These sounded better. The sound was richer, had better separation in the high end, and just wasn't muddied/or off color in the low end.

For listening to music, floor standing speakers are the way to go, much better than any of those wall mountable little speakers prevalent on home theater systems. We watch quite a few music DVDs (concerts, videos) and the sound these speakers produce is almost like being there, and sometimes better than being there live.

Now compared to Klipsch, the Klipsch sounded muddy and could not provide as much separation on high sounds. The JBLs sounded more 3-d than Klipsch - same receiver models & sound source.

Compared to Polk, the JBLs just seemed to sound more energetic, again same receiver models & sound source. It might be that the JBLs were pushing more on the high end than the Polks did. At least that was my subjective impression.

We've had these now for a few months, and are so happy we got them (part of my bday present, see review for Yamaha 5760). We had an old partially functioning 10-year old Panasonic receiver with 4-ohm Advent speakers. I loved those Advents but they can't match the sound from these speakers.

One caution:
These speakers are heavy, so you want to watch out if you have little toddlers, I would recommend using a furniture tie kit to tie them to a wall. Otherwise a toddler or pulling up baby could tip them over onto themselves and end up very hurt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great floorstanding speakers, August 9, 2004
By
This review is from: JBL Northridge E80 3-Way Dual 6-Inch Floorstanding Speaker, Single (Black Ash) (Electronics)
These speakers are fantastic. I spent a lot of time sampling all of the speaker setups at the national electronics stores, and these sound far better than anything else in the price range with great high and low frequency response and sound definition. They are good for anyone looking to buy a pair of stereo speakers or as the centerpieces (front right and left channels) of a great home theatre setup for under $1000 (JBL has an array of matching center and surround speakers). They also look good with the covers off. Unfortunately they take up a lot of space in a small apartment.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word: WOW., February 16, 2006
This review is from: JBL Northridge E80 3-Way Dual 6-Inch Floorstanding Speaker, Single (Black Ash) (Electronics)
These speakers will literally change the way you hear your music or movie collection. They beautifully separate the a capella voices of (for example) Ladysmith Black Mambazo and make it sound as though they are performing in your living room. They provide crystal clear audio upgrades to any of the Dolby or other options on a relatively sophisticated home theatre system, even one with previously great L-R speakers (infinity), and they fill even a large room with amazing sound. These speakers are so excellent that I'd give them 6 stars if that were possible. Bonus: they are on sale now at a deep discount. Definitely the best investment I've made in audio equipment in years.
