Compared with Klipsch/Polk in store, liked these best,

At our local BB store, we could compare the JBL speakers hooked up to the identical receiver model (older yamaha) and the same content source. These sounded better. The sound was richer, had better separation in the high end, and just wasn't muddied/or off color in the low end.
For listening to music, floor standing speakers are the way to go, much better than any of those wall mountable little speakers prevalent on home theater systems. We watch quite a few music DVDs (concerts, videos) and the sound these speakers produce is almost like being there, and sometimes better than being there live. Now compared to Klipsch, the Klipsch sounded muddy and could not provide as much separation on high sounds. The JBLs sounded more 3-d than Klipsch - same receiver models & sound source. Compared to Polk, the JBLs just seemed to sound more energetic, again same receiver models & sound source. It might be that the JBLs were pushing more on the high end than the Polks did. At least that was my subjective impression. We've had these now for a few months, and are so happy we got them (part of my bday present, see review for Yamaha 5760). We had an old partially functioning 10-year old Panasonic receiver with 4-ohm Advent speakers. I loved those Advents but they can't match the sound from these speakers. One caution: These speakers are heavy, so you want to watch out if you have little toddlers, I would recommend using a furniture tie kit to tie them to a wall. Otherwise a toddler or pulling up baby could tip them over onto themselves and end up very hurt.

These speakers are fantastic. I spent a lot of time sampling all of the speaker setups at the national electronics stores, and these sound far better than anything else in the price range with great high and low frequency response and sound definition. They are good for anyone looking to buy a pair of stereo speakers or as the centerpieces (front right and left channels) of a great home theatre setup for under $1000 (JBL has an array of matching center and surround speakers). They also look good with the covers off. Unfortunately they take up a lot of space in a small apartment.

These speakers will literally change the way you hear your music or movie collection. They beautifully separate the a capella voices of (for example) Ladysmith Black Mambazo and make it sound as though they are performing in your living room. They provide crystal clear audio upgrades to any of the Dolby or other options on a relatively sophisticated home theatre system, even one with previously great L-R speakers (infinity), and they fill even a large room with amazing sound. These speakers are so excellent that I'd give them 6 stars if that were possible. Bonus: they are on sale now at a deep discount. Definitely the best investment I've made in audio equipment in years.

I bought a pair of the E80's last june (2004) at BB and like the other reviewer these blew away the Klipsch and the Polk. The Polk had too much seperation, they sounded more like a reference speaker (perhaps better for someone who listens to lots of electronic) and the Klipsch tended to be a little bass-oriented. That is what I like about these JBL's--crisp highs and good mid-bass, but they know when the sub should take care of the real bass. I am looking forward to getting the E35 center channel, as right know I am using an older center channel that was given to me. Buy these!!!

they look nice, produce great sound, and cost only $300 for both. I had researched so many and founded these two. So far, very extremely pleased with them. They are flawless.

I have had these speakers for 2 weeks now and they sound GREAT!!! I have them "bi-amp" wired off of my pioneer vsx-1015txk and these have a teriffic full range clear sound with nice tight bass. I gave them 5 stars because these speakers should cost more money. You wont be dissapointed!!!!

I haven't had many audio systems and these speakers are actually the first column speakers I have had. I bought them to upgrade the shelf speakers that come with my HTR-5935 Yamaha receiver. Eventhough they both have 6.5" woofers the difference is enormous, specially the high and mid sounds where I think these speakers really shine. About the bass sounds you'll definetely need a subwoofer. Actually I see no big reason to invest in the E90 or E100 because all 3 models need a subwoofer to compensate the lack of bass. Buy these speakers, nobody can get dissapointed.

Granted I have not owned any really expensive speakers in my life, but I have listened to a lot. These speakers have a sub-woofer, two woofers, a midrange and a tweeter and they sound very well balanced with good separation and a lot of power. I am enjoying them very much. They make me appreciate music that is well performed and the above average singing voices. Worth the money. KB

These were the third set of speakers I auditioned in my home when I was upgrading my home theater. I have owned the complete 80 series Northridge speaker set for about four years now. These do need a sub to help out the really low bass, as they are only six inch drivers after all, and dont have any crazy baffling to increase the bass response. While I am sure 1500$ speakers can outperform these moderately priced units, I am consistently impressed by the clean sound and lack of tone coloration that these speakers provide.
What a lot of people don't realize is that the room your stereo is in colors the sound much more than the speakers themselves.I have deployed this setup in four different houses with tile floors, wooden floors, carpet, sheet rock, wood siding etc. and each room has sounded quite different. The best was a smaller room with carpet over sub-floor, wood paneling and exposed beam ceiling. Go figure. Another important thing is to match the Center Left Right speakers. This line all share identical tweeters, which avoids distracting voice differentiation as a object goes from left to right in home theater. I have these paired with a THX ultra 2 sub, which is definitely a big part of the sound. I have had the sub get disconnected for a few weeks without noticing, however. I plan on upgrading my receiver/ dvd player before these speakers, if at all.
