Great Sub, Great Price,
By
This review is from: JBL Northridge E250P 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer with 250-Watt Digital Amplifier, Single (Black Ash) (Electronics)
I have this sub paired with JBL E30 satelites, JBL E C35 center, JBL E N24WII for surrounds and a Yamaha RX-V767 AV receiver/amp.
This sub is the star of my new HT/stereo setup. I use this system in my main family/great room for music 60% of the time and surround system for movies 40%, and this sub does great for both. This speaker has great lows (real low) for movies etc, it will engualf the room with bass, and it has great, tight bass - punch for music. I listen to everything from Sade & Rick Braun to Korn & Tool and this speaker does great at whatever it is asked to do. I think the front firing configuration on this sub is more accurate and predictable than the typical down firing subs. Bottom line - if you have the space for this (it is big, the only possible negative about it) buy this subwoofer you will not be dissapointed!

This sub is on the low end of the spectrum of powered subs for your home theatre. By far the best feature is the cost. Decent entry level sub but not by any means stunning in performance. The power rating of 400w is rated on the scale of cheap audio where they try to sell to people who think.. wow i'm getting x,000 watts for how much? So dont let the 400w fool you, its really much lower than stated.
As for sound, it is a ported enclosure (port vents downward) so it is a bandpass type box. Bandpass meaning that the way the enclosure is structured, it is made to pass certain frequencies well and others are extremely weak. Its very boomy on low frequencies and quite weak once you get towards the 100hz range and higher. So it is definately an addition to an existing sound system that already has mid bass covered. Bass reproduction isnt very tight, probably due to weak driver so most music is going to sound fair at best, except long bassy notes of hip-hop tracks. It does sound decent on movies where things blow up and you have long drawn out and low rumbling bass. So for home theater it isnt really too bad.. again emphasizing on you already have mid-bass on your system. The driver is so-so quality, i have a feeling that if I put a better 12" sub driver in there and closed up the port this thing would sound a lot better. My suggestion for the same cost, go with the Velodyne Acoustics CHT-12BV.

The JBL E250p is a keeper,

I have written a review on this JBL subwoofer at every possible place ever since I have opened and tested this woofer out. I must say that I was skeptical about buying a JBL because I have heard so many bad things from HSU and SV Subwoofer owners. While it goes without saying the E250p is not quite as good as the more expensive woofers, the price is more than reasonable.
When I first announced to my friends (big car audio enthusiasts)that I was in the market for a subwoofer for my home audio equipment they all said the same thing, "once you have bass you only want more." How right they were. I bought a second E250p about a month after recieving the first one. I am definately not a big technical guru, but I am big on music and true replication of the bands I listen to; whether it be a piece by vivaldi, a rap song by Missy Elliot, or a heavy metal song by Pantera. One Subwoofer replicated a symphony or bass pedal beautifully and drew you into the music, two just evened out the sound throughout the entire room. For those who prefer movies over music from their home theater setup, I personally couldn't be happier with the E250p. Whether it is the sharks of Finding Nemo, the dark ambiance of Van Helsing, or any scene of Black Hawk Down, this JBL handles it incredibly well. For video game players, all I can say is wow. Simply wow.

Even though I already have a wonderful PB12 of 3+ years, I saw this at Best Buy for a hundred bucks as it has a broken grill. No problem there, 30 minute fix. My previous setup (N38II's, N26II's, S-CenterII and the PB12) was perfect. I couldn't do hardly any better without spending big bucks. I put my PB12 behind my seat, and set this up front where the PB12 was. To me, they sound the same (as I had the PB12 sitting on its side to be front firing), which was wonderful. Response is great into the 20Hz range, and it is crisp and clean. I have the crossover set at 100Hz, works great. If you see a good deal on one, don't hesitate to pick it up, you won't be dissapointed.

We have a basic extensive system set up with a Yamaha HTR-5760 7.1 receiver, 2 x E90 towers, EC25 center channel, and a pair of E30 rear speakers. This sub is the perfect complement to anyone's component home audio system. It excells in music and movie experiences, and the variable crossover and volume is great to custom tune to each situation. I cannot think of a better sub for the price on the market. It truly carries a great smooth sound not found in smaller subwoofers, and is easily capable of pressurizing standard size rooms. I am extremely pleased with this product and recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the thousand to drop on the ones that the "number driven" stores try to sell. A must buy...

I was initially looking at Velodyne's offerings, especially their DPS-12, which I've played with at Circuit City. While the Velodyne is definitely a great sub, the E250 costs ($219) less than half the Velodyne's price (and that's shipped). I put it into my audio system, and couldn't be happier for the price I paid. If you can get your hands on one for cheap, go for it.

Awesome DEEP Bass!!,

This Northridge Sub, rumble with movies, it's ideal and perfect, at very low frequencies and imperceptible distorsions rated at high levels at 25Hz with the crossover set on 50Hz you'll hear and feel the ".1"
In addition, you should try the 180º or 0º switch mode. If you want use line speaker levels, this sub has two set of banana biding post and one pair (output) for the satellites. For music, The E250P, sounds deep and strong, if you really need bass for a bad recording. if you're planning to watch (and hear) a music video, I recommend to power on, adds a dramatic effect. Although I preffer not use the E250P for music, due to my E80 provides excellent smooth bass (between 38Hz or 43Hz, depending from music source) Use a rigid subwoofer cable for this one, you'll hear the difference. The finished of the E250P, is in beautyful black, seems very solid structure construcion and his firing front driver, features a compact design. For the price, you'll get the benefits (and more) from other expensive subs.

R.I.P. To A Great Sounding Sub,
This review is from: JBL Northridge E250P 12-Inch Powered Subwoofer with 250-Watt Digital Amplifier, Single (Black Ash) (Electronics)
I bought the JBL E250P after hearing it, shopping around to hear what else was available, and then realizing it was a very musical sub that never strained to reach those bottom notes. So I bought it. But like so many others, mine died after 5 years of great service. Same symptoms as so many others. It would flash between off and idle, start to boom for no reason, then the razzes began before it konked out for good. The problems with this sub are well documented. Many claim that leaving it on "Auto" rather than turning it on and off when needed, precipitates the problems. I dunno. I'm now stuck between repairing it (a guy on eBay says he can do it for $150 but with only a 30 day warranty) or shopping for a new sub. Right now my system is using a smaller Infinity 10" as a standby.

Great sound, I have had it for 1 year and love the bass produced by this speaker.
I would purchase another one if I needed an additional unit. |
