4.0 out of 5 stars Love the gun! But needs some modifications.
I bought this to spear lionfish as I dive, and wanted something I could hang out of the way on my BC. The gun is very nice and its length is perfect. But the spear tip it comes with is too blunt for lionfish (which I knew in advance) and I suspect for many other small fish. I tried the spear on some lionfish and it literally bounced off of several of them because the tip...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for a second gun, but get a longer one first.
Works well as a backup but you need a longer one for a primary. This also comes with string instead of a coil cord to connect the spear and gun. The spear tip also comes pretty dull and may need some sharpening. The surgical tubing is tight and may be hard to stretch. The trigger is also horrible on this one. It is very heavy and creepy. If you know firearms, you will...

I bought this to spear lionfish as I dive, and wanted something I could hang out of the way on my BC. The gun is very nice and its length is perfect. But the spear tip it comes with is too blunt for lionfish (which I knew in advance) and I suspect for many other small fish. I tried the spear on some lionfish and it literally bounced off of several of them because the tip is too blunt. I bought a threaded shaft and added a three-pronger tip and now it works great. (The shaft on this model is NOT threaded so you either need to buy a different shaft or buy a threading die and thread the shaft yourself.) Wish JBL had thought of all this!

The rubber band is very strong, and a little too powerful for such a small gun and smaller fish. It takes two strong hands to load it. Wish they had put a slightly longer one on it and I may make that mod soon.

You're going to want to buy a coil lanyard so the string doesn't float around and get tangled in your equipment. I picked up a rubber chair tip at the hardware to cover the three-pronger tip (which I added) while diving. I also bought a Maxpedition UFSB 'universal flashlight sheath (holster) which makes a GREAT holster for the JBL mini (the holster is also sold on Amazon, is very heavy duty and has several adjustments you can make to fit the speargun into it). I hook the sheath/holster to a ring on the side of my BC. Allows me to have the gun with me but out of the way, and keeps my hands free.

All of which is to say, "great gun" but plan on spending some additional money to make mods.

i bought this gun and have used it twice now it packs a pretty hard punch for such a tiny gun, great for murky close range shots very manuverable around rocks and it fits in my camelback which makes it ideal for backpacking in and free diving. only down side i see is the safety is a little stiff which should get better with time, the band is powerful making it dificult to load (still faster loading than a full size gun) and the point it comes with is worthless. this makes my third speargun and it was a good investment i fitted it with a break away tip and havent lost a fish with it.

4.0 out of 5 stars JBL Mini Carbine fits my bill, June 26, 2011

I got this "pistol" size gun a few years ago for a specific set of conditions I spear in. In Alaska we are allowed to spear Northern Pike in freshwater and its a great way to enjoy the sport in a lake environment. But the conditions our pike love are not very diver friendly. They love to hide in dense (make that very dense) weed beds in shallow waters 2 to 6 feet deep. In order to track them down its like swimming through a bowl of spaghetti noodles and your shooting distance is often literally point blank as you squirm through the vegetation and then find yourself eye to eye with a northern. Under these circumstances the smaller and shorter the spear gun the easier it is to get through the weeds with less tangle ups than a longer spear gun. Since point blank is your shot, this little gun offers plenty of power to drill through fish up to ten pounds. I'd get another if I ever lost this one. I can carry this around all day long without fatigue. The short size is a bit awkward for reloading compared to a longer gun that you can brace against your body but you can live with that.

The spear tip also comes pretty dull and may need some sharpening. The surgical tubing is tight and may be hard to stretch. The trigger is also horrible on this one. It is very heavy and creepy. If you know firearms, you will understand those terms. But not a good trigger.....I would use this more as a poking tool if needed before actually pulling the trigger on something. Heck I may use a Glock 17 with underwater cups before resorting to this! I was able to add a Pelican light with a stainless steel hose clamp to the front of this easily though. Good backup and looks cool for show but not good enough for an only or primary spear gun.
